Going for the One sessions
2011 Edition

Lineage, disks 1 & 2: 2nd generation Umatic tape - PAL VHS - NTSC DV lossless digital video - TheTooleMan - DVD

During the summer of 2011, my anonymous sidekick and I got to work on the transfer and mastering of video tapes that had long been in the possession of a mutual friend. The transfer involved purchasing hardware, and considerable effort was expended in achieving high-quality results.

While all of this material has been available for some time, this is the highest-quality version yet.

Released by TheTooleMan on the 35th anniversary of the release of the album "Going for the One," July 7, 1977 7-7-77.

THIS VIDEO IS STRICTLY NOT FOR SALE.

Fascinating to hear how the music was molded and developed through the sessions, but, even more so, how the final takes showed greater restraint, which is the essence of the perfection of the finished record and is characteristic of Going for the One as a whole. A great historical document of the birth of one of the best rock albums ever made. Since 1977, I'd envisioned Mountain Studios as a thing of crystalline beauty, but it looks more like a seedy basement in Notting Hill...

First of all: This is what makes YouTube a real treasure.., I am pretty sure I would never have seen this without YouTube. 8:22-16:00 - sounded already great. What a band!!! From 21:40 - Rick had that sound... In-cre-dib-ly beautiful.

Going For The One was released 2 days before my 16th birthday in the summer of 1977. I bought the vinyl LP from the New Releases section of a record store. When a high school friend found out I had it, she said "You know Vikki C______. If you let her know you have the new YES album and some weed, you will get very lucky". I took the advice. Vikki and I had a lot of good times and I did get lucky many times. I love that album for many reasons, and that one is a great memory from long ago.

RIP Chris Squire. You changed the face of music with your wonderful talents.
  • RIP Alan White. The rock and foundation of the band from 1973 onward. Always so involved and so dedicated. I'm glad we have this and other footage to document their working together so well.

Oh how many countless hours I sat in my bedroom listening to this album absolutely enthralled from beginning to end. RIP Chris, you're dearly missed

Seeing footage of the sessions for all of their albums would be a dream come true.

Unbelievable record in so many ways. First and foremost being the excellent title track, not to mention my favorite Yes song. I will never forget the first time I heard this song, which was probably KMET FM, circa 1977. I was 13 years old and had been hip to Yes for about 4 years by then. That tells you how friggin great Yes is. Going for the one is by far their best record.

43:47 when my Boyz Steve and Chris sing Dylan is probably the best thing I have ever seen on youtube!

Rick Wakeman what a card! "Difficult to put into words....like losing ones stiffy"

SO incredibly elated that they have the making/jamming/evolution, and recording of this album on film! Especially Awaken ...with much unbrokenness of the best parts of the piece!  It comes the closest to pure ecstatic divinity that a song can get in my opinion!  l first heard it 37 years ago at 16, and it knocked the wind out of me!  l'm STILL trying to catch my breath!!!!
  • @theresa42213
An absolute wonnder to behold! lf there was any composition that one could pick to watch the construction of ......AWAKEN would be the piece most chosen! And here it is ....right before our eyes! A blessing from God imo. Soooo happy!
