I take a leap into the utter perfection that is Into the Spider Verse in order to explore what it is that makes it's most perfect scene so god damn perfect.

So this was supposed to come out about five months ago, but I'm currently in the middle of the whole transition from high school to college, so I hope you'll cut me a break if the upload schedule is a little sparse for awhile. Not that it's ever been all that consistent to begin with, but I feel like I should at least update you guys on why this took so damn long.

This video now has some messed up audio in the beginning of the "Setup" section to prevent the video from being blocked entirely. Looking back, I'm surprised it took so long for there to be an issue like that. Don't know how much longer the video will be able to stay up, but I don't have it in me to remake or re-edit it, so yeah. It's just gonna have to stay a little fucked up until it inevitably goes down again. Spanish subtitles now available, thanks to @fan110_mica on Twitter! "Miles' movement style looks nothing like any of them." Correct. Miles moves with the exaggerated swagger of a black teen.
  • @aztecperson8285
Saying that Miles moves most like his uncle, hits different
  • What makes this scene even more powerful is the way it was written into the script, far before the animations ever came. To quote, "Miles walks to the edge of the of the roof, the wind is buffeting... and LEAPS! The camera is UPSIDE DOWN. Miles isn't falling through the frame. He's RISING.

I really love that they never demonize his uncle. yes, he’s a criminal, but he’s not a cartoonish villain. he loves others, lives somewhere, enjoys music, is a person . and more than that, is a person Miles loves back, even if it’s complicated. he doesn’t turn away from the good parts of his uncle, but takes them in as guidance, just as much as the good things about his dad. in a way, Miles’ success is the brothers reconciling through him

Fun fact. During the beginning of the movie, Miles was animated at a slower frame rate to give him a clumsy and hesitant over all look. As he refined the control over his power they animated him at a higher frame rate to make his movements smoother and more crisp. I love this movie!
  • You could literally pause any part of the movie and make it a wallpaper

This is what Stan Lee always wanted. Anyone can put on the mask, anyone can accomplish what they set out too.

I feel like Miles' main struggle being self doubt is very fitting as in a traditional Spider-man story there's only one Spider-man, whereas for Miles there are other Spider-people that he will inevitably be compared to.
  • @chickenfootrust
The way he leaps off of rooftops is just full of the exaggerated swagger of a black teen.
  • The way miles was flailing around while webbing shows that its not over. He's not perfect at web slinging at all, but it's good enough. It's literally a leap of faith.

I will always remember when I went to the cinema because I was bored and I bought a ticket to see this movie because it was the only room that had seats. I went without expectation, without seeing any trailer, without knowing the movie existed, and yet when Miles took the leap of faith, I remember getting goosebumps and starting to cry. That scene and that movie has been the greatest work of art that I have ever watched and it was all just by chance.

Prowler's Theme is an insanely underappreciated piece of audio art.

Nobody: English teachers explaining why their favorite Shakespeare quote is the best ever:

Now after ATSV, it makes so much sense why miles parkours alot and swings less. After all he wasn't supposed to be Spiderman but instead become the prowler. Mannnnn this franchise IS SUCH A MASTERPIECE.

It's sooo nice to see that there are people out there who put effort and thought into their movies and don't just make a cash grab
  • @xkufse2413
also, quite a small detail but also a good one: for the whole movie Miles was animated in 12 fps, instead of 24 fps until the leap of faith.

My wife was a dancer and she brought a great detail to my attention. In ballet, the only acceptable colors for shoes are pink and white. Gwen’s being a greenish color is the ballet version of punk.

I still say that this is one of the most perfect movie experiences I've ever had. Usually I'm the type to complain about petty dumb crap with my friends as the credits are rolling and we have our post-movie discussion, but after this movie we just kind of sat there in the theatre seats like, "... we have nothing bad to say about this movie."
