An unboxing and review of the HydroPets kit.

In this video I give a history of the Hydro Pets brine shrimp kits and compare it to other products such as Sea Monkeys. I also give some tips for culturing artemia and raising them to adulthood.

  • Another great review! You were right on the money about the survival rate with a hydro pets. As I mentioned to you on IG about the tank's base removal, I am restarting my tank but with the Sea Monkey brand packets. I also noticed after a couple of weeks salt crystals and grime would build up along the top. The interior where the water line is would also cake up with gunk. One tip I do have for this tank is after rinsing it out a couple of times to put a tablespoon or two of dry rice in the tank, then fill it up just a third or so other way filled with warm water, put on the lid, and cover the holes and shake it up. It gives enough grit to clean off the walls since the opening is so tiny. Then rinse thoroughly. Thank you so much for this review! Your work is awesome as always!

Honestly i think this is a pretty good set. Everything from the built in light to the resealable food pouch to the tank's circular design is really nice. Its unfortunate that the first attempt was a bust. I'd love to pick up a hydropets tank of my own.

It's a shame the packet contents didn't work out, but I really do like the increased volume and built in light for this tank! I also find the smooth color changes for the light to be much preferable to the one in the ocean adventure tank; it seems a bit annoying to have a light continually flashing on and off as it changes colors. The lack of a need for batteries is a big plus, too!
  • Always a delight to watch your content. Never thought I’d be so interested in Sea Monkies & other instant pet products! Can’t wait to see more! ❤
  • @courtneyl
I love the features of the tank and honestly, I'd really consider buying this for myself if they decide to relaunch fixing the flaws that you found!
  • I wish someone would manufacture a tank with a tiny airstone built in too... doesn't have to include a pump, just a nice little obscured aerator that doesn't have to hang in the top of the tank!

Another spot on review, John. I love the tank shape, the base, the lighting element from the bottom, the lighting control and it being USB powered. I would like it to be a little smaller and wider with a larger opening at the top. It’s easy for that small lid to slip into the tank. (Personal experience.) The bubbler is worthless. I bought mine early on to test out the competition. My hatch rate was zero but the company seems to have gotten that fixed. But it went from too few to too many. I would LOVE to see Sea-Monkeys release a similar tank with these adjustments made — a deluxe kit with the best of all worlds. In fact, I pitched something very similar that went nowhere. (Surprise, surprise!) Great review!

This seems like a more convenient tank for work/personal desks since it has the LED light inside and it also can fit a air line in, so you don’t need to have a lot of space for it. I feel like you could make some adjustments to it to fit a heater in there like maybe cut a small hole in the top area to fit it in, or in the back and just patch the hole back up before adding in water. I’m not too sure but I think it’s possible, at least until they do it themselves. Since they’re relatively new, it’s likely they’ll adjust to better suit the growing conditions
  • I had a similar problem with the coral sea dragons tank, far too many eggs hatched, but they mostly died after a few days, i managed to keep some of them alive by changing the water, i guess there was a spike in ammonia, although I thought brine shrimp were quite tolerant of ammonia. I really like the circular design of the tank though, I've used a circular glass vase which works well.
  • I always like seeing the bigger tanks. The ones that come with the sea monkeys always seemed way to small to me. I like the fact this one has a built in light tho. Would make an awesome night light and be a relaxing thing to watch before going to sleep.
  • I have that feeling I'll be picking up one myself soon ^^' The packet was a bust, sure- but the shape, built in light, etc- is amazing. I'm most excited about the light though- because having the purple light would be great since I can grow agley better than I am now in my current one. I'll be picking up one of these and some sea monkeys soon, that's for sure!
  • I have had no problems with mine! My kids and I love watching our hydro pets grow. We just stare at it for forever sometimes just watching them swim and flip and play. I would highly recommend it and my sisters loved it so much they got their own and just like me they had no issues and was just as successful as mine!
  • I've been using this kit since Easter and my brine shrimp have all been doing well so far I have adults and babies and so far so good I was really surprised at the amount of eggs and babies as well but I haven't lost many and I had them hatching from day two after set up and about a week following. I'm really enjoying the light feature at night it really highlights them while they swim 😊
  • @Nuttilicious
I actually really like this kit. The tank is great and functional, the shape is more interesting than a standard sea monkeys kit, and the cycleable lights by themselves are better than any lighting solution Sea Monkeys came up with imo. Just the ability to be able to grow algae in their tank without additional tools is a big winner for me, especially if you seed it early on. doing that might encourage more algae to grow and avoid the crash from the positive feedback loop of ammonia spike and artemia death in the tank. If you give that a try, I'd like to know the results. It's a shame that without that knowledge, the amount of eggs made the colony doomed to fail though. That's the main con for me, but since it's an easy remedy, the tank is functional, and the makers had the foresight of having a resealable strip on the food makes this a win for me.

I picked this up on Amazon for $24.99 with a $10.00 coupon came to $14.99. Worth it just for the tank and light. I'll use 2 packs of sea monkey eggs. Thanks for the great video.
  • @kecola
I'm going to buy this for the tank alone! I already have brine shrimp eggs and instant ocean. I'll use the included eggs when I'm finally ready to set up a big aquarium for my children 😅 So many thanks for your review! I'll just need to figure out how to keep the water warm.
  • "The tank is f!#*ing awesome " 😂😂 omg that coming out of you completely threw me off, but YES! it was great! And yes, that tank is f'n awesome!! Much ❤
  • @IamABF
    Great video as always John!
  • @palerider5823
The light is cool, and plus I like how it has a cord and doesn't use batteries so there is less waste. And like you said the purple light can be used for a mini grow light.
