Lily Tomlin is one of the great American comics from the mid-to-late 20th century who's still living and active today. A dynamic force on stage, in film, and television (particularly in sketch comedy), Tomlin's diverse talents are well known, and these (along with her off kilter comic timing and natural charm) have as much to do with her longevity as any other factor. Despite living a very public life as a performer, however, many details about Lily Tomlin's private life have never been explicitly shared by the artist herself, though observers have been able to fill in the gaps with some accuracy. This is the untold truth of Lily Tomlin.

I have watched (and loved) Lily Tomlin ever since I saw her on Laugh-in. Her telephone operator always had me in stitches. "One ringy-dingy, two ringy-dingy... giggle, snort." In my opinion, she, as much as many of her contemporaries, deserves a special Oscar for lifetime achievement because of how much she has changed every venue she's ever appeared in. She will always be a guiding light to those who just want to be themselves and excel.

I love that she put her talents above everything else. Her private life is no one's business. As a public figure, she obviously wants people to appreciate her body of work and nothing else. Private life stays private.
  • I love this woman ever since I saw her on Laugh In when I was a child. I love her in Grace and Frankie I am sad that that show it over. So sad two great Actresses had to come to end in a greta show of what life is really like, disfunctional families we have today.
  • I was fortunate to watch Lily's performance with the All Nurse Band on SNL. I haven't found it since then. She sang a torch song draped on the piano. Gorgeous performance
  • I love Lilly Tomlin. Everyone loves Lilly Tomlin and I’ve never once heard a negative comment on Lilly Tomlin. She’s a role model for my 18 year old daughter!!!!
  • I love Lily in everything she does. Her zest for life and love of laughter just permeate her performances! She brings out the poet in me. Bless you, gracious lady!
  • Lily Tomlin is genuine and genius. And while she makes me laugh so hard I want to pee, she has given me many bits of truth I love to pass on, such as "Why is it when we talk to God we're said to be praying, but when God talks to us we're schizophrenic?"

3:12 is the scene that garnered the nomination, in my opinion. she didn't speak, she was observing a singer. but she conveyed amazing energy in that restraint. I have never seen another actress achieve a similar moment and I am an avid movie goer.

I saw her on Broadway in The search for intelligent life in the universe when I was 20, no set or costumes just her, so funny she was brilliant, I went by myself as I was visiting friend’s in NY from Australia, so it was especially exciting for me having already been a fan of hers, but never thinking I would be able to see her live because Australia was a 25hr flight from Los Angeles then as we had to stop to refuel twice , Australia to New Zealand, then Hawaii then LA, on one trip back we even had to have an unscheduled stop in New Caledonia due to a head wind we needed more fuel to finish the last dash across the Pacific Ocean. Now you can do it direct. But I have loved her work ever since I first saw her in the 70’s.

Lily Tomlin is a very great actress & comedian. I've always loved her.
  • I have loved her since 9 to 5. I was 11 when I first saw her and mam she just is incredible. Very happy she's had a happy life. And glad she and her wife can live their lives now in the open. Must have been so hard to hide her happiness because of prejudice. And yet through it all she never lost touch with what she does, who she is, and her creative genuis.

I've followed Lily's career from the beginning. She is truly one of a kind. One thing I didn't know was her relationship with Lorne Michaels. Thanks for putting together this gr8 piece.
  • Have adored Lily since her Laugh-In days. Ernestine, Edith Ann, Susie Sorority and her various one-liners (dead-panned or the "excitable woman"!). Saw Search for Life while in development (in Philly) and she didn't need costumes or sets - she created them in your mind, with Wagner's writing & her stage presence. Heck, I even liked that silly movie with Midler "Big Business" - playing twins w/different personalities ain't easy! So much funny and mother wit over the decades. Brava!
  • @jenzpad
She has a sparkle in her eye when she smiles that is so rare. Love her 💞
  • @heatherr0420
Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner make such a beautiful couple, and together over 50 years that's incredible
  • Lily was nominated again in Grandma!! Lily is an amazing talent and beautiful human being!!
  • @jburdick8611
LOVE that woman. She's amazingly talented and a really good human being, as well. That's a rare combination in Hollywood.....especially the "really good human being" part. Most of 'em have sold their souls for fame. Not Lilly. Thank you Lilly!!!
  • She is so wonderful. This video didn't mention Big Business, in which she starred alongside Bette Midler. An absolutely wonderful performance by both of them. One of my faves when I need laughter. 💜
  • I have loved Lilly Timlin since the 70s, and I was introduced to her through her SNL characters. She truly is the wonderful person I thought she was.
