Lily Tomlin & Jane Wagner Reflect on Comedy and Their Careers

Published 2019-11-04
During a dual retrospective at Film at Lincoln Center, Lily Tomlin & Jane Wagner joined writer Hilton Als for a lively, wide-ranging discussion of their work across film, television, and theater. They discussed how their lasting and fruitful partnership has reshaped the art of American comedy and expanded its feminist imagination.

Film at Lincoln Center is dedicated to supporting the art and elevating the craft of cinema and enriching film culture.

Film at Lincoln Center fulfills its mission through the programming of festivals, series, retrospectives, and new releases; the publication of Film Comment; the presentation of podcasts, talks, and special events; the creation and implementation of Artist Initiatives; and our Film in Education curriculum and screenings. Since its founding in 1969, this nonprofit organization has brought the celebration of American and international film to the world-renowned arts complex Lincoln Center, making the discussion and appreciation of cinema accessible to a broad audience, and ensuring that it remains an essential art form for years to come.

50 years... such profound love and respect for each other with a fair dose of humour while walking new territory. Am I the only one weeping feeling blessed to at least take a peep into their beautiful relationship?

Lily Tomlin is referring to a nine-and-a-half-minute segment “Juke and Opal” (which you can see here on YouTube) in her second TV special Lily. New Yorker theater critic Hilton Als in a profile on Richard Pryor three decades later would call it “the most profound meditation on race and class that I have ever seen on a major network.”

15:09 I'm saving this part so I can watch it again. I don't know why but I think it's so funny how Lily is trying to tell Jane to put her microphone closer.
