New Aston Martin V12 Vantage review - baby Aston gets 690bhp for one final supercar-hunting mission

Aston Martin's smallest model, the Vantage sports car, has just been treated to a serious powertrain makeover, and we've already tested the results on track. This, the fourth-generation V12 Vantage, has a 690bhp turbocharged V12 sourced from the DB11 and DBS Superleggera. It's now rated for a top speed of 200mph; it's faster-accelerating than any other Vantage; and it has a whacking 20 per more power to weight than any of its Vantage siblings.

This is also the last time that Aston Martin will ever squeeze a V12 engine under the low bonnet of a Vantage super sports car, it says, as electrification rises amongst its commercial priorities, and it adopts more engines from Mercedes-AMG rather than those built at its old owner Ford's engine plant in Cologne, Germany.

It's very rare for any car maker to announce the imminent end of life of any of its models; so, in this case, does ultimate also mean best? Matt Saunders took to Aston Martin's Stowe Circuit, at Silverstone, to find out.

Lovely sound of the Valkyrie in the background! Oh and the v12 Vantage sounds great as well.
  • Remember when Clarkson made his "driving an ending" film about the first one of these? Well fifteen years later, here we are. Enjoy it while it lasts.
  • I am proud to say my brother has already booked Aston Martin V12 Vantage. Coming in the later part of 2022. So excited for him.👍

You know, what if everyone (with the cash) made their minds up, and didn’t buy the pending electric wave of offerings? It’s pretty simple to me: manufacturers decide what your choices are (for a while), but they don’t decide IF you buy. Little would make me happier than watching this inevitable investment by so many automakers fall on its face. Long live petrol. Clever audio work, btw.

I really like the styling changes i know many dont seem to like it, but like u said its limited run and instant collectible otherwise that price seems ridiculous but for small companies like aston and ferrari its how they are going to make money I hope aston make it financially the car world would be sad place without them

Couldn’t listen to a word he was saying over that glorious sound during the walk around. Great advertisement 🫠

Man, I'm loving seeing you grow more and more confident with your style in these reviews. Also, that was the best excuse of a walk-around ever —no worries Aston, we won't show that other car 🤣 Brilliant!

Finally an older guy who doesn't hate that wing

Aston is moving to EVs? Oh. Well - it was good to know them!

Great car, surprised by the sound quality being a little sub par in parts of this video!? A little over exposed too. Got through to the end but surprising for Autocar..?
  • @SuryaDe
This car looks much better without the rear wing and a darker color if you ask me.
  • @Josh-er6oz
Bit garishly styled, the old Vantage was stunning

I always enjoy Autocar reviews. Manage to get facts and feelings into almost every one. Perhaps some ad libbing at Silverstone when the race cars where drowning you out (a geeky that sounds like an xyx out testing, doesn't it sound great and the arguing into the sound of the Vantage) and perhaps another take when the helicopter was drowning you out. Keep up the good work, but perhaps schedule a bit more time for filming 😊

Never saw an Aston Martin in bright red before, it looks really desirable!. I'd prefer this baby Aston over the now rather boring 911 GT3 RS, styling wise.

Just looks gorgeous…a different league to 911s, AMGs and a Roma..Portofino..every time you see a standard vantage people look at it..no one notices a 911, they look away from a AMG..with this the smile and nod in admiration…Why only a limited edition…
