What's Going On With Top Thrill 2 At Cedar Point?

Published 2024-05-15
When will Cedar Point's NEW Top Thrill 2 reopen and what is going on with it? Plus, how does this extended closure affect Cedar Point's future? Should we blame Cedar Point or Zamperla? Should Cedar Point have gone with Intamin for this project?

No one knows yet - but what we do know is Zamperla has a major problem on their hands.

The part that bugs me the most is cedar points 3 best “working” coasters are made by the 2 company’s the refuse to work with
  • @PatrickRyan150
I had a bad feeling when you noticed the shimmy in the silver train.
  • @dougronald561
Good point about solving the locker situation while the park has the chance. Nobody else said that, but it's true.
  • @ScottyMania313
If I'm Intamin, now would be a great time to send Cedar Fair people a nice gift basket and a montage of their greatest coasters in action with "Don't You Forget About Me" playing in the background, anything to get them out of the CF doghouse. I'd love to see King's Island get their first Intamin coaster someday, perhaps something like Velocicoaster for that nice spot of land where Vortex used to be.
  • My brother lives in Port Clinton and hangs at a bar that some of the cedar point staff hang out in. He said some of the staff were told that bogie’s were showing signs of premature stress. They noticed it during the media openings and the initial few days of operation but were waiting to see if it would settle in or get worse. Apparently, they got worse.

This ride is over 400ft tall and does 120mph, there will be issues. I'm sure Zamperla will figure it out and the ride will be fine. Over time I'm pretty sure it'll be more reliable than it was prior.
  • @MrHaaspaul
At the speeds this coaster goes you got to have some very tough durable wheel assemblies !
  • @iitzfizz
I always thought something like this was going to happen.. Zamperla have never attempted anything close to the scale of this and were also using the lightning trains that are themselves a brand new design
  • I think this should actually accelerate their next addition. They have to save face now. I think zamperla is going to fix things as fast as possible and this time no mistakes. Some things you just can't simulate when designing something. Now they know. How does it effect their other refurbished coaster they installed though...that's a good question
  • @Aerolandaircraft
I'm going to defend Zamperla here. They have done everything perfectly up until this point but this is the first ever time the Lightning trains are being used, and it's for a 400 foot coaster! Zamperla has handled the situation amazingly, and CP now has three Top 25 coasters to thank for it.

As someone who worked there in the past and takes multiple trips a summer, it seems CP is running on fumes. They have seemingly been cutting corners on cost the past 5-10 years. Millenium and maverick are very worn down. Closed often due to mechanical issues(and ofcourse weather)that could be avoided with more maintenance. There also have been more and more restaurant chains that are leaving the point. Chick fila(left twice 😂) as well as Johnny rockets and now MELT too! When their contracts expire CP seemingly is looking for too big of a cut that these places are not willing to pay. Being cheap while also charging outrageous prices is def going to catch up to them!
  • @Galistia
Should have paid up and went with Intamin. Hope they saved the old trains so they can retro fit them lol. But for real, we could have had so much more than a bare minimum ride. Airtime hill on the launch track, vertical LSMs, a more traditional rollback, trains that are already tested. Prototype or not, they didn't test the trains properly for the ride they were sticking them on. Like really, who couldn't see this coming with them maxing out the limits of their prototype train pretty much right out of the gate? They tried to sprint before they learned to walk confidently. And they used the public's safety as their test to try to slingshot their company into the big boy coaster game. Thankfully this stuff was being paid attention to with maintenance checks.

I drove in this last weekend from Chicago to ride it. Bummed Saturday when it looked like it was closed for wind. So I go back Sunday, gorgeous weather, when the news drops. Felt such disappointment that I left the park to stop wasting even more money. I can’t help but blame cedar point for using low-budget Zamperla so they can continue to give the metaphorical middle finger to Intamin.
  • Numerous ex intamin employees now work for Zamperla. It makes since they would hire them to do the work since they would be familiar with the coaster. Thats why they chose Zamperla
  • @matthewmoore8270
Depends on the extent that it reached. The best case is that it's just the wheels, redesign the wheels, and install them hopefully without changing anything else. This could maybe be by Memorial Day. If it affected the wheel boggies. This will take a bit longer, maybe sometime in June. Take this with a grain of salt, but I heard that it may have affected the milled aluminum chasis. I hope that this isn't the case because that could mean that Zamperla may have to redesign the bulk of the train completely. This, of course, would take a lot longer.
  • @garywillis7253
The irritating part of the CP not working with Intiman and RMC is those company's built exactly what CF asked for ..CF has an engineering department that signed off on everything proposed and built. Lets not forget the OG dragster wasnt built as it was designed, the launch track should have been longer but CF said no do it in the space you have yet we had issues with launch system,Maverick was the 1st blitz or coaster of its kind so issues was almost a given...Millie should have been like I305 with 1 station but CF insisted on the seperate load/unload...SV.was one of the 1st hyper/hybrids,once again the 1st of anything is going to have issue's..CF is petty, now we have Zamperla soon to be ostracized for building exsctky was the park wanted...
  • @Wandering_Outlaw
I'm seeing a lot of hate for zamperla in the comments section, this is an enormous project for them. Nobody should expect smooth sailing from a company that went from building 30mph 50 ft tall wildmice to redesigning a 420ft tall 100+ mph thrill coaster in a little over two years
  • @steelcity7466
Like you said this is a prototype ride. The trains and larger wheels have no track record to look at. You can run simulations and tests but until you run the actual ride under the everyday stress and loads you won't know for sure how they will perform and last. Our first ride was the front of blue and the last was the back of silver. I don't know if it was the different row but we noticed a lot more shaking with silver. They can't add too much weight to the trains so bigger/thicker may not be on the table. I'm sure they will test the metal to make sure it met specifications and maybe increase the specs for the new ones. If they change too many parts/pieces it will be down until 2025. If they can keep most of the items and specs and maybe increase the hardness of the metal I think they can be back up in 4 weeks. I don't know if it's an option but if they can swap these out weekly for new it could be up and running by Memorial Day. That would take a lot of time and money but I think that would get it running the earliest. I think we will see one train get the revised parts and start running in a month. The other trains won't get the modified parts until they are sure the new will hold up. Then the others will be updated and there will be hundreds of cycles if not more. I think Fury went through hundreds of cycles before reopening last year. That would take days if not a week or more. Then reinspect and probably run more and reinspect. They will run an excessive amount of tests well above and beyond what will be required. People will throw Zamperla under the bus but I think they have the most to lose if this gets worse. I'm sure they have all available resources working this issue. I think any other manufacturer would of had issues of some type but that can't be proven. I say mid June, best case, if multiple items need replaced it may be out of service until 2025.
  • @sjbrown23
I think the end of June makes sense with the amount of testing and inspection that will be done.
  • @LyndsieDances
Our team is working tirelessly to use a different material for the wheel assembly. We understand the disappointment, so we have another team working on a safe way to have the initial launch give a true rollback to make up for this situation
