Treasury Secretary Yellen has urged the EU to raise import tariffs on China, but Von der Leyen has stated that they will not join such measures. Today, we are honored to have Professor Haico Ebbers join us to discuss the US-China trade war and China's “overcapacity”.

  • @victorchew151

Isn’t the US dollar production overcapacity?

US & EU: When we’re winning, we strongly believe in open markets and free trades. But when we’re losing, we strongly believe in protectionism, sanctions and tariffs. This is what we called “fair trade” under our rules based on “international rules-based order”.

The speaker hits the nail on the head when he points out that Chinese think of the long term and therefore build extra capacity in preparation for future demand whereas the west and the US in particular only think of profits in the here and now.

American can't afford US products. It Americans can afford US products , they prefer to buy American products because there will be more Americans have jobs. So, China is actually helping poor Americans!
  • Is China's overcapacity terrible, or is it more terrible for the United States to over-issue Treasury bonds, collect deposits at high interest rates, and play with the world economy

At last, someone comes up with a clear explanation. Accusing China of overcapacity doesn't make sense. China has the rights to produce the quantity of a type of product it chooses. The price tends to be low as the more it produces, the lower is the cost per unit. Also, there can never be overcapacity as China is not producing just for the West, especially the US; it caters to the rest of the world as well.
  • Woo....US has an overcapacity of over 7.4 trillion dollars. Be real, be very real!!!
  • I think every country should be free to choose. The US should be free to choose not to use Chinese products and instead resurrect their industrial capacity (if that is even possible now). Americans will vote on that strategy with their feet. Likewise European countries, the global south can do the same. China is also free to try to export their goods and have whatever capacity they want - market success will define it in the end. With the emerging middle class and their consumerism, the rise of 800 million people out of poverty, China needs to develop green tech (and fast) to prevent their country turning into a toxic hellhole. Other countries can hop on for the ride, or not, but I'm pretty sure that those Chinese companies will still do ok without the US or even Europe (which in the scheme of things is just icing on the cake) - they're working to preserve their country and with the full support (sometimes in direct subsidies, usually with excellent infrastructure and supply chain efficiencies) of their government and have a customer base of 800 million and counting.

Overcapacity as oppose to Undercapacity due to laziness?
  • @ooxx1816
The United States also has overcapacity in the banknote printing industry. The whole world should dedollarized.
  • My new GMC is at the dealer waiting for one sensor manufactured in China. There are substantial amounts of these pickups at the dealer. The new pickup has been idled since mid-January. My government could care less.
  • EUust obey to USA and loose Chinese market. Some companies will go bankrupt but master has to be followed. Even if this is directly harming you. Funny situation.
  • @roeyearl9431
EU is a mix bag, but unfortunately von der leyen got strong following to US wishes and most of her family resides in the USA.
  • Generally, those Anglo-Saxon countries worldwide are socially, economically and politically sick. They are on their national decline since post Covid and are suffering long Covid! 😢
  • @Zakaius
