Norway's Ministry of Climate and Environment was just awarded a $43.5 million contract with three satellite monitoring groups in an effort to curb the effects of climate change and protect rainforests.

This high-res timelapse from one of those satellite monitoring groups — Planet — shows deforestation in Lábrea, State of Amazonas, Brazil, during a 3-year period.

'These images will give the communities a better understanding of the problems' location and dimension so that their actions can be better planned,' says Ianukulá Kaiabi Suiá, an Indigenous leader in São Félix do Xingu, Brazil.

According to Mongabay, forests spanning nearly the size of Europe have been destroyed over the last 40 years.
