Borderlands is a 2009 action role-playing first-person shooter video game developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K.

The game's story focuses on a group of four "Vault Hunters", who travel to the distant planet of Pandora to search for the "Vault", which is rumored to contain advanced alien technology and other priceless riches. The hunters piece together clues to find the Vault while battling the savage wildlife of Pandora, local bandits that populate the planet, and ultimately banding together to prevent the Atlas Corporation and its privately funded paramilitary forces from reaching the Vault first.

I get such a huge nostalgia hit whenever I hear the soundtrack to this game. This game was so formative to my entire life and it's good to see it's still being appreciated.
  • Now this is a proper appreciation of a classic! You touch all the bases and even illuminate the less-appreciated elements. I actually got to work as a tester for Borderlands, back prior to the game shifting to its cel-shaded look. Us testers could feel it at the time that this game would be something special, and when some rogue dev switched the cel-shade switch, we knew the game was gonna be brilliant! That dev opened a PANDORA'S BOX of greatness and we've been basking in that treasure ever since! Freaking great job with this one!

This is why love the Guns, Love, and Tentacles DLC was my favorite. It felt like the old, less cringey feel.

Oh, so much nostalgia! I dream of a symbiosis from part 1+2=Borderlands 4. Then Bitchford shows up and shows off his Duvall Magic and I wake up screaming... 😔 Keep up the good work!

I know Hyacsho will roll his eyes at me, as I’m forever highlighting elements in games that remind me of my favourite films - well, Aliens, really. And sometimes Starship Troopers. Borderlands has a visual similarity to District 9, in parts of your video. And that makes it special to me.

I love Borderlands, and you're right Firestone is ... well, it's Firestone, I think I always wanted them to get new NPC's later in the game's story. Oh, and Pandora's Box :D
  • Your channel will easily keep getting bigger! This is so well done! Borderlands 1 is so special! And the first dlc was great! The change to the visual was a smart touch

Lovely video, mate, what a fun trip down memory lane this was. Your editing is coming in leaps and bounds too. Can’t wait for the We Happy Few video!

Pandora's Box! but yeah, Borderlands just has this uncanny vibe to it, and it's hard to pin down what causes this vibe, but it just works. There aren't any games out there like Borderlands

Well done my dude, great video ♥️

If there's one thing I realised when playing Bl1, after having started with Bl2 and then played Bl Pre-Sequel, it's that I really wish they had kept the moodier and darker atmosphere of the first game. Hell I also wish they'd kept the more hard sci-fi weapon designs instead of going for the over the top toy-esq look that we got now. Even the humor is better done in Bl1. Honestly the only improvements that franchise made going forward was character skill trees and better vehicle controls. I'd bring up Bl3, but I like to pretend that thing never happened.
  • I'm looking forward to returning to this game when I finally start my Chronological Story playthrough of the franchise, also known as Pandora's Box 😉

Hi, huge BL nerd here (I dedicate way too much of my life to this franchise its insane lmfao), there's some false information in your video that I'd like to raise awareness for. Firstly, Borderlands is not the "father" of the Looter Shooter genre. Common misconception. The first looter shooter is Hellgate London, which came out 2 years before Borderlands did. Borderlands is the one game that popularized it though. Secondly, Borderlands is not "cel-shaded". Once again, common misconception. Randy Pitchford (CEO of Gearbox) adressed this multiple times (in tweets and during the BL3 Unreal Engine 4 Tech Demo at GDC in 2017) but barely anyone ever took notice somehow. For the outlines they used a technique called NBED (Normal-based Edge-Detection). Cel-Shading (yes, with one L, also a common misconception) is a completely different shading techique that no Borderlands game ever used. Not even the Telltale or iOS spin-offs. Thirdly, and this is gonna be a lore-heavy one, the "hostile alien species" that you mentioned towards the end of the video, are NOT aliens. They are completely artificial; they're drones, built and developed with a sprinkle of biologically engineering BYYYY the aliens (e.g. the Eridians). And there's a reason why you see the Guardians but not the Eridians. Thousands of years before the story of BL1 takes place, the Eridians tasked themselves to seal the Destroyer away, therefore they built the vault. But to get the Destroyer in there they sacrificed themselves in the process for the greater good. Like, the entire alien civilization of the Eridians, gone. The Guardians, the insectoid looking drone things that you encounter in Borderlands, were built to scare away potential threats that could free the Destroyer again. Anyways, point is, you don't fight hostile aliens in Borderlands (unless you count the Destroyer in, the Destroyer IS an alien) - instead you're fighting sentient alien technology there. The lore part of Eridians being extinct was already established in BL1. The sacrifice part came in a BL3 audio log.
