The “S” in Ulysses S. Grant actually DID stand for Simpson. When he was admitted to West Point they accidentally recorded his name as Ulysses Simpson Grant(Simpson being his mother’s maiden name). He went with it instead of his real name(Hiram Ulysses Grant) because he was worried his classmates would tease him for his initials(HUG).
