2025 Toyota Fortuner Revealed: Shocking Fuel Efficiency!

The Toyota Fortuner has taken a significant step forward by incorporating mild-hybrid turbo-diesel power, similar to its HiLux ute counterpart. This new technology, which includes a 48-volt battery and an electric motor-generator, aims to improve fuel efficiency by up to five percent. While this feature has debuted in South Africa, it’s still uncertain if it will be available in Australia.

In South Africa, the Fortuner 48V pairs a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with the mild-hybrid system, maintaining power outputs of 150kW and 500Nm. This is the same configuration found in Australia’s Toyota HiLux V-Active and the upcoming 250-Series LandCruiser Prado. The Fortuner’s mild-hybrid setup includes a six-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel drive system. However, it lacks the eight-speed automatic transmission featured in the new Prado, which could offer even greater fuel efficiency due to its broader range of gear ratios.

Despite the technological advancements, the introduction of mild-hybrid technology in the Fortuner comes at a higher cost. In South Africa, it adds approximately 11,000 Rand (around $900), a steeper increase compared to the $590 to $770 for the HiLux V-Active in Australia.

Australia sources its Fortuner and HiLux from Thailand, which has not yet adopted the mild-hybrid system for these models. This raises questions about when, or if, Australian consumers will see these fuel-saving technologies in their Fortuner.

The Fortuner has been available in Australia since 2015 and received a mid-life facelift and technology upgrades in 2020. However, it features a distinct design compared to the South African version. Last year, the Fortuner struggled in sales, with only 3,619 units sold in Australia, significantly lagging behind the Ford Everest and the outgoing Prado.

Toyota fans and potential buyers are eager to see if and when the mild-hybrid Fortuner will arrive in Australia, as it promises improved efficiency and performance. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting development in the world of SUVs.
