A 'zen' poem from China: The birds have vanished into the sky, and now the last cloud drains away. We sit together, the mountain and I, until only the mountain remains. - Li Po I love that poem and this music together with it work beautifully together.

I have a deep respect for the Japanese people and their culture. Here's hoping it will still be around for a long time!

I haven’t heard this in over 20 years. I used to fall asleep to it as a kid. Thank you for posting this.

Not all sound is music. But all music is sound. Not all thoughts are beliefs, but all beliefs are thoughts. There is a point where sound transitions to music. In Mind. I particularly appreciate the silences built into shakuhachi playing. From silence springs sound and to it, it returns. Just as motion arises from, pivots about and returns to a point of stillness. What greater teaching can there be, than to simply sit and be as you are, where you are... here, now?

No matter how bad your mind gets, this music smooths it and refines it back to a calm moment.
  • this guy is a for real master, you can hear it in how he plays @14:10 it sounds like one endless breath that is humming or fluttering. from my experience playing some brass and winds, that is a technique called "flutter tongue" and his flutter is just so soft and he is able to articulate it so finely that it just dissolves indistinguishably back into the steady notes. @15:30. Outstanding!

The gentleman pictured is practicing the gentle Japanese art of 'rakey'.
  • Shakuhachi, by the tone only, makes us feeling a silence, a meditation, and even a philosophy, anytime and anywhere. Japan is an another world to the West.

I’m in love with the sound and mood the shakuhachi evokes. So my friend loaned me one to practice for awhile. I blew and blew til I was blue in the face and the mind. I tried for months then eventually accepted that it’d take an intense dedication for years to be able to play a simple song. It was probably the most difficult thing I’ve ever tried. Much respect to these masters.
