Not all sound is music. But all music is sound. Not all thoughts are beliefs, but all beliefs are thoughts. There is a point where sound transitions to music. In Mind. I particularly appreciate the silences built into shakuhachi playing. From silence springs sound and to it, it returns. Just as motion arises from, pivots about and returns to a point of stillness. What greater teaching can there be, than to simply sit and be as you are, where you are... here, now?

this guy is a for real master, you can hear it in how he plays @14:10 it sounds like one endless breath that is humming or fluttering. from my experience playing some brass and winds, that is a technique called "flutter tongue" and his flutter is just so soft and he is able to articulate it so finely that it just dissolves indistinguishably back into the steady notes. @15:30. Outstanding!

Thanks for posting this album. This is the real deal when it comes to traditional world music, and Kōhachiro Miyata is a true master of the shakuhachi. Only those who have made a sincere attempt to master this most difficult of flutes, know the degree of persistence and discipline it takes to play it with this kind of inspiration and skill.
