For more than 30 years the Mistral Hotel in Maleme, Western Crete, has dedicated itself to looking after solo and single holiday makers. It has a loyal following of guests who return year after year. In June 2024 the hotel owner, Adonis Gialamakaris, invited Anthea Turner to visit the hotel with a video crew to discover just what made it so special. She explored the local town of Chania, some notable local sites and stayed at the hotel for a few days to share the Mistral experience, meeting and interviewing guests and some of the staff.

    Much as I admire hotels like this, I just couldn't go myself - I'd feel like some saddo solo woman (as I always do when I holiday alone) and that the hospitality was like some staged 'performance' for my benefit. Not for me, but I'm glad other people enjoyed it and got something out of it - and I guess it's WAY better than holidaying solo with couples everywhere (which is hell on earth). Good luck to them.
