Starfield is a Bethesda RPG that was marketed as the ultimate space exploration game. And Starfield reviews reflect that. Because Starfield gameplay is textbook Bethesda and the ultimate space exploration game is usually thought of as a space simulator like No Man's Sky. But Starfield is not a space exploration sim. It's Fallout 3 in space with a splash of Oblivion for good measure. And I love this... but it took a minute to get over the cognitive dissonance. I spent an hour building a ship from scratch that I hated as soon as I took off with it. 10/10 game.

I chose the perk "Kid Stuff". I went to visit my parents and listened to every dialogue. And then realized I visit and talk to my fictional parents more than my real life parents. 10/10 game
  • I’d love a mod that adds all of the books full texts, so I could sit in my space house reading War of the Worlds

Starfield has fully convinced me to get away from video-game discourse, I'd rather just discover games on my own and formulate my own opinions based on experience than seek out that sweet sweet confirmation bias from youtubers and online personalities.
  • The first time I played starfield I forgot to quick save and lost over an hour of progress, so it’s safe to say it’s a Bethesda game
  • One of the reasons starfield not being a space exploration game like nms hit me so hard, is that its ship customisation would be so cool in a true space exploration game

I went in to Starfield completely blind. Like I didn't even know it existed until it had already released and I bought it immediately. Not expecting anything has me really loving the game for what it is.

Not gonna lie, that reverse ship building time-lapse was actually super clever and turned out great!
  • Love the idea of calling planets "interior spaces" to contrast with outer space
  • You can use your ship scanner to fast travel between star systems / planets without needing to go into the star-map every time. It is more seamless and immersive and not to mention less tedious and quicker.

I don't ever remember Starfield being advertised as an open-world survival game and I never once heard NMS called a space RPG. I think what happened is everyone just assumed it would be like ED or NMS and then were surprised when it was a space RPG like they kept telling us.
  • Personally i really love this game. Ive played 30 hours and spent it base building and exploring space and different solar systems barely doing a single mission or quest. Exploration is somewhat on rails compared to NMS but i think its a lot of fun regardless.
  • The reversed ship building looks cooler than it would have done the other way, since it looks like youre just instantly placing things instead of going through picking the parts

Such a good vid. Most relatable Starfield review imo.

my favorite interaction with this game so far: “we’ve been trying to reach you about your ship’s extended warranty” contrasted with the part that has annoyed me most: “cannot fast travel while jumping or falling” As someone who has a weird habit of pausing the game while midair this one has had me backing out of the map to let my character land only after having already done a million inputs to target where i wanted to go too many times. On another note, awesome video. Staying around to check out what else you’ve got. And of course, to flirt with every character in the game.
  • I feel the exact same way about this game. I’m loving it. I’m 60 hours in, barely started the main quest, haven’t even started any factions, and I’ve been having a blast just enjoying side content, outpost building, and exploration

Honestly I wish AAA games did more stuff that indies did. Regular development updates, sneak peaks, snippets of gameplay. Removes all the confusion and builds more trust than stupid flashy trailers can. But nooooo. God forbid they’re transparent with customers.

I think the problem with Starfield's marketing was that people thought it was gonna be the next No Man's Sky when it's more like Outer Worlds.
  • Nah man, they CHOSE to advertise it incorrectly. They made it "impossible" to convey to people just how boring their fast-travel ridden, prefab-laden, "w" key-holding, POI traveling simulator would be. They'd be shooting themselves in the face with 12ga if they were even halfway honest in the first place.
  • "David Copperfield? Did he turn himself into a book?" is better writing than any of the in-game dialogue
