The ancient myths, rituals and magic of the ancient Canaanites spent millennia known only through an Israelite lens, darkly. That is, in large part, until the discovery of the ancient lost city of Ugarit and the cuneiform tablets preserved in the fires that doomed the city as part of the Bronze Age Collapse. In this episode, I'll be exploring the precious remains of the divinatory and incantation texts which provide us a glimpse into the rituals by which these ancient Canaanites sought to peer into the future, counter evil magic and even cure a divine hangover!

you know there's something wrong with the world when on a scholarly video on Canaan you get a commercial for "ancient aliens"

Justin’s chill explanations make me feel I can digest the toughest subjects if I keep an honest dialogue with myself about if I’m truly understanding or not

Hoping you and your family are all on the mend and feeling better now.

"Compared to the anti-Canaanite propaganda from the Hebrew Bible". Once again, Dr. Sledge slaps those tough truth grits down onto griddle! I'm buckled up, I can tell this is gonna be a good one! And I get to enjoying this from the northern shores of Cannaan, here in Beirut no less!

Snakebite, scorpion sting, evil eye, bad dreams, and invasions. Intriguing to compare the stresses of modern life to the litany of ancient worries and magical remedies! Thank you so much for your scholarship, humor, and wonderful, highly illuminating Esoterica channel!

The islamic Hadith literature seems to say almost the exact things: snake, scorpion, and evil eye taking center stage in the "magic" practices mentioned therein. Probably has cultural origins in these earlier traditions.
  • The Origins of Biblical Monotheism: Israel's Polytheistic Background and the Ugaritic Texts is a great read for those intesested in this area of study. I do love this channel.
  • You're helping me set up lore and ancient magics for my story with elements borrowed from what I learn here.
  • "Disarming the bites of vipers" as it was described in Virgil's golden age, is a euphemism (disphemism? Kakaphemism?) that Ficino refers to in a really nasty way when discussing how the Golden Age (of the Messiah) has already come in DCR: "Look! Christians and Jews get along far more now than they used to! the Golden Age has already come!"
  • It's been however many thousand years and we're still using the "hair of the dog" for a hangover cure ;) 🤣
  • I find it so interesting that Israelite religion is formed out of ancient Canaanite religion, in fact at one time there probably wasn't a difference as Israelites are historically connected to ancient Canaan.

Oh gosh, please get well soon... Here's the Medicine Buddha mantra to help you along: औं भैषज्ये भैषज्ये महाभैषज्यसमुद्गते स्वाहा ।। Oṃ bhaiṣajye bhaiṣajye mahābhaiṣajyasamudgate svāhā !
  • I watched this with COVID, so I guess there is a connection. I hope you and yours get well soon.

Feel better soon Dr. Sledge. Hopefully the family is better/not infected.
  • Wow, the 'hair of the dog' thing was a very entertaining surprise! It really is amazing how some concepts and ideas can linger in culture and just... persist. Not due to anyone taking any special effort to keep them alive, but simply due to most people not questioning their origin and applicability. I don't know very much about cultures as ancient as Ugarit and the Bronze Age, but I know there are a tremendous amount of ideas adopted for pragmatic reasons during the Industrial Revolution as factories led to booming and overcrowded urban centers which we simply... keep around. Even when those ideas harm people in the modern day, and every practical reason that justified them fell away a century or several decades ago, many people will step up to resist change simply because it's "always" been a certain way. It would make sense for things to persist for a long time if they had some grain of truth to them, or some lingering utility to people... but just having the words and phrases around and overheard seems to let them perpetuate themselves! Amazing!

I made it three years without getting it. Now I'm sitting in quarantine. Hope you make a speedy recovery. Thank you for all the work.
  • Monstermancy sounds like it should be a song by Lordi. You give us such an incredible opportunity to dive into ancient People's minds. Cheers.
