Border collies training is rewarding. A border collie pup can learn new tricks faster than I could ever imagine. For those new dog owners who are looking to adopt any dog breed, I hope this video can provide a good idea of expectation and reality. I shared a little bit insights into Ellie's behaviour, personality, and our modes of interaction. More important, I share some common mistakes on how to train a puppy so that you can avoid them.

Just a quick note on positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement:
Both positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement are needed in dog training. Many people mistake negative reinforcement as just punishment. Never put her in a dog crate if she makes a mistake. Technically, punishment is a form of negative reinforcement, but that's not the form we hope to perform on our pups.

A few examples of coupling negative and positive reinforcement in dog training:
When the dog chews on furnitures or shoes, we just correct their behaviour by blocking them or taking away the shoe, that is negative reinforcement. Then we replace the shoe with a dog toy, that is positive . When the dog jumps on you to beg for food, ignoring her is a negative reinforcement. If then we follow up with an ask to sit and then reward, we can turn the negative reinforcement into a positive one.

I normally find that when positive and negative reinforcements are used together, the best results can happen.

  • I had a Border Collie 20 years ago. They are high intelligent and very active dogs. After teaching him to translate Russian literature and figuring income tax he slowed down some. He gave great financial advice that is helping me in retirement now. I miss him!

I have had two Border Collies. I lost one last March, she was 18 years and 4 months her name was Cho-pay, so very very smart. I still have her sister from the same liter, she is 19 years and two months. Her name is Girl Scout. They have been my girls for so long, my kids.
  • I have a 3.5 year old Border Collie, Aeon is utterly brilliant and as loyal as... as a Collie.🤣 You’re correct, the failure in training is always mine. Aeon wouldn’t change the light bulbs. It was because he didn’t like the way the wiring was done. (Yes, a mild exaggeration) I never wanted a dog, I don’t really like dogs. Aeon is a Border Collie. They’re not really dogs. They are life partners. They are also the greatest partners. I can’t believe how much this furry fish stick has improved my life.

As the owner of a 10 1/2 yr. old male border collie, I really loved watching this video. You obviously love Ellie as a member of your family, and she is such a beautiful dog. Congratulations on your success with her, and I hope you enjoy many, many years with her as a trusted companion. They are such great dogs, and so sociable, just a joy to be around. Thanks for sharing your story with her!

My Border Collie hated riding in the truck her first-year until we moved West-coast to East-coast on a 7-day drive. Within the first few hours her attitude changed. Suddenly, she liked the truck. Ever since, she wanted to be in the truck, driving or not. The passenger seat was her favorite spot on earth. Sure miss that dog.

my family got a minerature collie (sheltie) when i was 10, and she lived to be 18. she hated and was terrified of being in a car. when i got a house, she came to live with me and i lived somewhat near a park, so at least once a week i took both her and a collie that she raised to the park. they both loved the park! so it took no time at all for both dogs to run to the car when i opened the door - instead of going the other direction - because they were usually going there lol. i have had 1 minerature collie, 4 standard collies, and 3 border collies, and although border collies are the absolute smartest dogs there are, i believe that all types of collies, and then herding dogs in general, are smarter than just about any other dog there is.

Thank you for the update! Your videos have been enjoyable and so helpful in training Selene, my border collie pup! 🙂
  • Just found you on here my tri coloured collie had epilepsy and two weeks of fireworks brought on 2 weeks of seizures , I had to put him to sleep on the 24th November. He was the best dog ever so loving and kind and never complained . I now have an 11 week old collie as life without them is awful

She is absolutely adorable! There will never be a breed like Border Collie. These dogs are absolutely amazing. Yesterday was five months since I lost my dog. It feels like this loss will last forever.

Excellent video and your explanation of your training was on point. I had a border collie that looked just like Ellie. She worked our property and livestock. She was the most beautiful, well behaved border. She lived to be 15 years old. Cherish every minute with her they are the most loyal gentle giants. Just full of love

What a beauty she is...congrats on all the training and progress. I am experiencing the same in terms of my BC responding differently with my other family members... consistency is key👌🏽🌺🇿🇦🌹

You've done some amazing work with Ali's training. I have a 9 month old Border Collie and she is really attentive and intelligent, it is definitely a rollercoaster but the moments of brilliance they show when you are building up communication makes all worth it. My pup has an amazing fetch now, she knows a ton of tricks but I need to keep up, she is not as patient as Ali, I have no chance with putting treats on her nose.
