Getting our clearance from Air Traffic Control to fly from Destin, FL (VPS) to Nashville, TN (BNA)!

Sometimes ATC speaks quickly! This is the shorthand I use when copying down a clearance to make sure I get all the info šŸ‘

  • Letā€™s get a few things out of the way šŸ˜… 1) Recorded on the ground before the flight, 2) I know my posture is bad and I have headset hair, 3) No, I donā€™t know what my face is doing throughout this video šŸ˜¬, 4) Let me know if you want more of these!!

If ATC doesn't work out for that guy he can always get a job as an auctioneer. šŸ˜‚
  • That's the verbal equivalent of a doctor's writing on a prescription.

I had a clearance delivered so fast I could not copy it. I requested he repeat it, He said what part did you miss, I said that part after ATC clears. He repeated it very slowly and snarky. What he did not know I was on an IFR flight test, the inspector called him back. Funny!

I worked radio communications for years. Rule One was to always speak slowly and clearly when relating information that is to be copied. In the long run it saves time and prevents confusion. As an exercise I would have trainees, both operators and agents, to imagine writing down what they were saying. Some I had to tell to actually write it as they were saying it. Everyone got it, understood the logic and effectiveness. My shift had zero incidents of misunderstood or missed information. A side benefit was that when communicating emergencies everyone calmed down a beat or two. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast, our calls were addressed without unnecessary stress and with great efficiency.
  • Some ATC guys think it's a speed talking contest. I heard one ATC guy who was enunciating so precisely you could have understood him if you had tin cans and string connecting to the ground.

The controller saved exactly 2.3 seconds talking fast opening up the possibility of a mistake. Mistake + Mistake = Accident.

damn someone made that coffee extra strong in the tower today
  • As a controller that sometimes issues the clearance too fast, I am glad to see the pilots can hear as fast as we speak. Well done, but to pilots without this kind of radio experience, if we are too fast, ask for a say again and please a little slower. We will never protest.
  • This is what terrifies me about getting my license. Really only thing I struggle with is understanding the radio.
  • Why does ATC always have to speak so ridiculously fast and mumble? Even after several replays I couldnā€™t make out what the guy was saying. Kudos to you MorganšŸ‘

Most of the reason this is made easier is because you already know the clearances routes, airports and frequencies before calling clearance. As a pilot you are basically listening for any change that may be happening and the squak code. In short, it's much easier to make out what ATC is saying when you basically know what's coming. At any rate, great job!
  • I was so glad to learn you could tell ATC you are a student pilot to slow them down.

I love planes and trains šŸ˜‚ Something about them. I love the power and sound both make!
