An entire episode of Friends without any dialogue:

I think we can all agree that laugh tracks are terrible. They're obnoxious, unnecessary, and an obvious waste of time- but exactly how much time? How much of an average episode of a sitcom like Friends is JUST laughter? That's the question I attempt to answer in this video.

This video was one I've been slowly writing for a few months, and one I had a ton of fun making. I know it's very different than anything I've put on this channel so I'm hoping you guys are on board. As you can probably tell, this was heavily inspired by the style of nerdwriter1 (   • Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaba...  ), one of my personal favorite youtubers.

It's a weird video because it combines comedy and math- two things that are very different. But if you've followed me on here for a while, you know that math is a strangely consistent theme in a lot of my videos. For some reason a love of statistics is deeply ingrained in my brain and there's just nothing you can do to change that so stop trying please.

Comment whatever feedback you'd like.

Laughing on laugh tracks is fine, but the second they cheer or go "awwwwww" i lose brain cells

It's why I love Modern Family so much. The mockumentary style just gets to me! The lack of a laugh track and the unstable camera just makes it feel very real like they're all an actual family. Honestly Modern Family was so great!

"The Office" is an absolute masterpiece of writing and direction

  • honestly id love a “why i love the office” video from drew, or even just a 9 hour long video of him summarizing every office episode that was incredibly entertaining

For me who has watched friends many times entirely all alone, laugh track does give me the feeling of not being alone at all while I am watching. In fact it does give me permission to not feel like an idiot to laugh out aloud in many scenes. Even when you are watching with friends and family it does give you a homely feel to it but i get it it's a thing of past and wouldn't feel right in today's sitcoms that's why it only work with friends which really does make it special as it is of it's time.

Instead of laugh tracks The Office just makes a character stare into the camera.

Honestly after a couple minutes of watching friends I don’t even notice the laugh track unless somebody famous walks in and the entire audience is screaming for 5 minutes
  • @marcia268
I heard Friends' creators say that sometimes they would change a joke because the audience wouldn't laugh so they would have to come up with a new joke and see the audience reaction. So laughs helped for that too. I like laughs, especially when something really good happens like Rachel and Ross's first kiss, they scream and it makes me feel like I'm not watching it alone.
  • If Friends wasn't shot in front of a live audience, Chandler and Monica would have been in a short-term relationship like originally planned. The long reaction from the live audience when it was revealed that Chandler and Monica slept together was what convinced the creative team to push through with Mondler.

I honestly don't even hear the laugh track... like my brain tunes it out
  • @itsjune2681
The Office doesn't need a laugh track because Jim is the laugh track.
  • I know it's been four years, but watching this video and hearing Drew appreciate the efforts of the crew of The Office really makes me smile. My dad was one of the cameramen on the show for a couple episodes, and it still seems like one of the more enjoyable work experiences he's had. He was actually one of the camera operators on Stress Relief :D

David Schwimmer is the best. The way he slides from behind the door to under the bed while keeping a straight face as Bruce Willis enters the room is pure unadulterated comedy. His expressions while applying powder and lotion to help his leather pants get back up kills me everytime I watch it.
  • It took me five seasons of watching the office to realize that my parents’ names are Michael and holly
  • @natebit7167
Just imagine if the office had laugh tracks. It would ruin the entire show.
  • @Bookish_emy
I've always felt the Office was more relatable, more personal and intimate. I felt like the characters were my best friends. Maybe because of the camera stares.
