Public sector workers are in line for a pay rise but 10 million pensioners will lose out on winter fuel payments in an attempt to fill a £22 billion black hole in the public finances, the Chancellor has announced.

Rachel Reeves said she was making “difficult decisions” as she accused the previous government of leaving £21.9 billion of unfunded commitments that it had “covered up from the country”.

Former Tory government adviser Claire Pearsall joins Talk’s Julia Hartley-Brewer to discuss this further.

Every pensioner that voted labour should be ashamed of themselves.

Pensioners are an easy target, they cant exactly strike like Teachers or Nurses. SHAME on the Labour Party!
  • £6.4 B for illegal migrants but can’t afford £1.5 B for our pensioners
  • @evc241
So they are cutting off money for pensioners who have paid into the system all their life in order to claw back money! Yet, they are housing in warm hotels and providing meals and all the trimmings to people who don’t have any right to be here at all! I find this despicable!

    Billions For Illegal Immigrants.......But £0 for OAP's
  • Shameful, taking the money off the pensioners to fund lavish union pay rises. Shameful!
  • @outlaw6421
Notice reeves says nothing about the 8 billion we spend on migrants

How about stop paying £300 a day for them just turning up in Parliament and abolish House of Lords will save millions.
  • And every immigrant in nice warm hotels who never paid a penny into the system will be smiling

Pensioners are not classed as "working people" despite paying National Insurance for many years to support others. As a 75 year old who worked for 50 years before retiring I hope that the the MPs will quickly let us know when they will cease to take fuel cost "expenses" for their second properties.
