Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Hasbro Mandalorian Helmet Repaint!

Published 2021-09-22
Adam shows you how to take Hasbro's The Black Series Mandalorian helmet and make it look more like the prop used on the show. As Adam and Norm experiment with the paint process, they run into unexpected results that make the helmet look amazing. Using some standard clear coat spray spray paint, airbrushed floor wax, and a weathering pass of Archive-X acrylic, you can transform the off-the-shelf helmet into a cosplay-worthy piece with just the right amount of shine and grime!

Adam: "I feel like we've been making this same video since the start of Tested"... ...and don't stop! Watching you or the team weather props is relaxing, interesting, and informative. Judging by the cleanliness of the cosplay you saw recently, it seems like this video is still important to make!

I like that Norm really perfected his spray paint technique! I still remember when he was painting the cosmonaut model and how unsure he looked in the beginning! Well done Norm! :D
  • @matjones97
Love how excited Adam gets doing things he loves.
  • @kahn04
“This is a mando walking away from you” and you’re dead so you can’t notice any flaws in his armour 🤣
  • @stropheum
Man it's pretty crazy to see how far Norm has come with his weathering skills! I remember the early videos he was very unsure or heavy handed but now he's like a seasoned pro
  • @hornet65
I see a really good looking replica of Mando's helmet... But I also see a blank Mandalorian helmet ready to be painted. Many of the Mandalorians in the show had either identical helmets painted different colors and/or with little addons. It's a good Mando helmet replica, but it's also a good starting point to be your own Mandalorian.

I love Adam's detailed explanation of everything he's doing instead of only using generic descriptors such as "shiny" or "smooth". It really helps us who don't understand finishing details to understand the process in a new light! You're the best, Adam!

Hey as great as the quality of the Anovos pieces are, it’s probably good to acknowledge that very many of their customers never got their products, or were strung along through years of delays. Following a lawsuit they’ve now reorganized under Rubies as Denuo Novo, so they may or may not be better now.
  • @Mireaze
I love the chrome finish. And some LEDs and you can start a draft punk tribute act
  • Adam's bit about focusing on fixing what's going to be seen (the front of the helmet rather than the back) reminded me a lot of my 3D Game Art class lol. There's a super common thing, normally called back-face culling, where Game Artists know a part of a wall or something won't be seen and they just don't even bother making it.

Ah Adam, how you made my Childhood along with the Old Mythbuster Gang, Am glad you are still doing what you enjoy much In building stuff but no longer destroy them :)
  • @RetroWaveDave
I am in the middle of making my own full Beskar version of Mando and this is the EXACT step where I am at- looking to weather my Black Series Helmet and match the rest of my homemade armor. THANK YOU
  • Adam: How do you feel? Norm: Oh, I feel great. I feel it could be even dirtier. I wanna go further. Palpatine/Sideous: DEW IT!!
  • Adam is the epitome of open source knowledge. I've learned so much from him simply by watching these videos. He's inspired my inner geek and prop maker.
  • @Kuda084
I absolutely love weathering and aging. I've found it so relaxing to do. Its so much fun to come up with the age "story" as you go. Thanks to you both for the years of suggestions!
  • @briw4647
Imagine that finish as a 80's cylon soldier.... man, that would be awesome
  • What amazes me is how fast, aggressive yet accurate Adam is at what he does. He’s truly an artist. Lovely to watch
  • @DicePunk
"Floor wax for eyes" Damn. This is the reason I watch. Adam always drops these underappreciated gems into the show and you need to hang on to every word to catch them.
