HOW TO GET YOUR DOG TO EAT!
First since I’m a veterinarian , I wanted to show Syringe feeding and how it is so useful for very sick dogs and for toy breed puppies who aren’t good eaters who can’t skip many meals. I like to use a 10ml syringe because it holds enough food. I use a brand of dog food called Hills AD and that is because this food is really fine and pureed almost already and suctions up nicely. You can pure whatever food you want to do this.

This food is also highly packed with nutrients. Your vet can tell you how much to feed your specific dog, but for this video im just showing you that syringe feeding is sometimes the only and best option for your dog.

Before we get to human food options, trying all different types of Canned Wet food mixed with their kibble that might make your dog eat their whole bowl of food! Okay, so now for that Picky puppy or Adult dog who just won’t eat their kibble. Gosh how frustrating. Here’s a few tricks I use. If any of these foods are causing diarrhea stop giving them immediately and go back to dog food only. Avoid adding fatty foods that can trigger serious pancreatitis or colitis resulting in diarrhea.

HUMAN FOOD TO MIX INTO KIBBLE:
1) Try adding warm water to their kibble.
2) Add shredded boiled chicken or turkey to their kibbleNumber
3) Steamed white rice
4) Goats milk carton or canned
5) Chopped up boiled eggs
6) Shredded mozzarella or parmesan cheese
7) Low sodium chicken broth or bone broth
8) Turkey meat or deli meats
9) Bland Greek yoghurt
10) baby food or canned tuna or canned chicken chunks

All cooked fish options are usually easy on a pets stomach and they love it too. High scent or stinky index will always help!

ANOTHER TRICK: That helps entice dogs to eat is using a Plate instead of their bowl. And then lastly is HAND FEEDING and a ton of positive happy voice talking:Some pets simply want that extra TLC with you and hand feeding may be the only way to get them to eat. I know this can be time consuming, but if that’s the only way then it must be done until they're feeling better enough to eat.

Also Veterinarians do have Appetite stimulants that really work to make dogs eat. I only recommend using these for sick patients. The most common ones we use is a pill called Mirtazapine and a liquid called Entyce. Steroids are very affective at increases a pets appetite but the side effects are too risky to use in long term situations.

Okay guys! I hope this helped you find some new ideas to help your pets eat! See you next time! And don't forget to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE

  • I tried the egg. Worked perfectly. Did not have to hand feed her this morning 😊

It's funny that Elsa wouldn't eat easily either as a puppy, our Lapponian is the same. We have to find all sorts of ways to try and get him to eat LOL. Good to know its kind of just a thing with them.
  • We picke up a cavapoo/goldendoodle. The breeder gave us a small bag of dimond puppy food, but he wont eat it. We did give him treats and little bit of eggs. He will eat that and human food. but I wondered if we gave him too many treats, because of trying to train him? And human food to get him to eat something?
  • Really great tips!! Thank you. Going to try them. I have no idea what’s going on with her.
