At Sydney's Stadium Australia, in front of a world record 110,000 people, the Australian and New Zealand Rugby teams played what many have called "the greatest game of Rugby ever played".

After just eight minutes the All Blacks were leading by an unbelievable 24 to 0. Miraculously, the Wallabies came back and were leading 35 to 34 when, in the dying moments of the game, the great All Black winger Jonah Lomu scored the winning try.

George Gregan played his heart out that day. As an All Black supporter. It was awesome to see George Gregan and Tim Horan at Jonahs Memorial service. Much respect to both teams. RIP Jonah Lomu All Black No 941

I was there. It really was the best match of rugby I have ever seen. It was an electric atmosphere in the stadium with a massive crowd not knowing from second to second who was going to win. That was what made it special not the defence or the attack. Every time Jonah got the ball in the second half the crowd went quiet, absolutely quiet, in anticipation of what he might do. A privilege to have seen the game and to have seen Jonah, who in the best game of rugby ever, was the best player.

This is the rugby answer to the Pittsburgh/Dallas Super Bowl games of the 70s. Heartstopping from start to finish.

Extraordinary game. One has to remember this was the first time Australia had played New Zealand since winning the Rugby World Cup. It was the battle of the Giants.

I remember this game started (for me) at 6am on a Saturday morning on Fox Sports World. I had only been interested in rugby for about a year, but I was able to watch this match live. Being a Wallaby fan, I hated to see NZ win...but the match itself was so fantastic that I ended up watching the replays, recording it, and forcing family to watch it with me. Truly, rugby of the gods.

Amazing, even today games between Australia and New Zealand still get the same number of tries. Only they're scored by one team.
  • Dude. This game gave me anxiety and I’m neither an Aussie or a Kiwi. That was intense. I now found the full game and will watch that. Thanks.

And I was there. First professional rugby match I ever saw live. Talk about expectations being set for the future

Thirteen years old, and still the best game I've ever seen. I watch this game, and I feel bad for my Aussie neighbours that they don't currently have a Gregan or a Larkham to make those good decisions in the backline. Most Aussies probably assume that all Kiwis like easy wins over them, but this one doesn't. I miss the days when we had Justin vs George vs Joost, three amazing players in the same position. I feel incredibly lucky to have witnessed such an era.

I was at this game, almost walked out after 10 minutes, left saying it was the greatest game I’ve seen, and we lost!

Honestly if rugby can be as great as this again, that would awesome
  • @serubaleboxing
This was the game that got me into rugby way back 18 years ago

I remember watching this game. I was in The US on business and a group of us found a bar that was screening the game and serving breakfast - there was about 15 Australians and 10 Kiwis watching it live - everyone of us could hardly speak when the whistle finally went - and typical of a rugby crowd, there was true respect shown by everyone Aussie and Kiwi alike. A fantastic game, two outstanding teams and a perfect result!
