Toyota 2GR: Everything You Need to Know

Published 2021-12-23
The Toyota 2GR was an engine platform with a few different variations and offers a great amount of performance for its size. It's such a good performer, that it can even be found in supercars from Lotus and Bolwell. Although the 2GR isn't a popular engine swap, it's still a great engine.

My IS350 had the 2GR-FSE and I supercharged it to make 430whp. Great V6. Now I have the ISF with the 2UR-GSE!

This engine is specifically why I bought my wife a 2016 Highlander. It's bulletproof design, decent power, decent economy equal low maintenance and longevity. It'll easily turn 200k with little more than 5k mile oil changes and a plug change at 100k.

Don't forget the 2grfse also came in the is350

2GRFE(268hp) was strictly for fwd platforms where the 2GRFSE(306hp) was strictly for RWD platforms. Up until around 2017 when the 2GRFKS released and they put that into all vehicles rwd or fwd (311hp). This is for sedans/vans and excludes trucks and hybrid vehicles.

I have the 2GR-FE in my Australian 2016 Toyota Aurion and I love it with the 6 speed auto!
  • Great video. I have a 2012 Rav4 V6 and it's a rocket. And at 170,000 miles it's been flawless.

Great family of engines. Their are some key differences between them though and parts aren't interchangeable. One key reason why this engine is popular is it can access 90% of its torque at 1300Revs. The FSE has 30 bolts holding the crank and they designed it to run 12 injectors from factory. The thing these engines really need is to be sleeved or run a close deck. Sadly they don't have a lot of hype and thus limited aftermarket support but the potential is available.

In summary the LS of V6's at probably a fraction of the cost, sweet. Great video!

The VVTi-W on the FKS I've heard allows it to switch in and out of Atkinson cycle rather than just being in Otto or Atkinson full time like the earlier versions.
