Walleye Ice Fishing Trip Goes Pretty Wrong

Published 2019-03-17
Here is some forgotten footage from the winter of 2019. I wanted to make an ice fishing trip with my 2 buddies somewhere cool this winter, and somehow we ended up going to upstate NY to target smallish keeper walleyes and burbot.. We had some guidance from a friend who has made this trip many times, and he said dawn and dusk were the times to get the walleyes… pretty much, before 9 am and after 5pm the bite would be on. well by 9am the first day, having marked only a couple fish and caught 0, I realized I had made a huge mistake. The fishing in my local area was pretty good at this time, and here I was 5 hours north for multiple days on a lake that was fishing poorly. Catching one random 17” walleye in the 9 o clock hour didn’t help my mood much as I knew that was just a small gift from the gods and nothing more… we caught some perch midday before getting a couple small eyes at dusk, but by the end of day 1 I was ready to tap out. 24oz Bud Ices from the gas station saved the first day… Day 2 I was more confident. we strategized and decided to hit a different part of the lake, and now I had some confidence in technique so I figured we were going to do well. wrong. I marked 1 fish all morning. by 8:15am I was ready to leave. we moved around a bit, marked nothing except one 11” perch which we released, but we opted to go steelhead fishing for the afternoon. No waders, no steelhead rods (we did have 7’ jigging rods)… no steelhead arsenal. basically we failed. the only fish the 3 of us caught was Kurts Brown trout, which was on the morning of the 3rd day. So thats it… all in all I have virtually blacked this trip out of my memory and as soon as I got home I went out and caught more and bigger walleyes in a few hours, 15 minutes from my house than I did in a day and a half on this frozen lake 5 hours away.

that black stuff in the holes is oil from snowmobiles, that steelhead you found is thiamin deficent, after being faught out many times, they swirl around then die.

  • Assuming you were in Oneida, I'm in the Binghamton area of new york, about 1hour and 20 minutes to there.. I've got buddies that go and ice fish there and are always grinding my gears to go.. I'm always like why?? I get more and alot bigger walleye right here in the Susquehanna River five minutes from my house.. One trip you should make next year is the Oswego River, we hammered walleye, browns, and steelhead there a couple months back
