Searching For Adirondack Lake Trout, Day 2

Published 2017-02-06
Elias (youtube.com/user/eliasvaisberg87) and myself had set out on a 3 day trip to the Adirondacks in upstate NY to try our luck at Ice fishing a lake we had never been to or even heard of, mainly to escape the city grind for a few days but obviously to also hopefully catch some decent fish through the ice. Was our strategy any good? That is debatable, based on how we caught almost nothing.. an accurate lake chart, gas auger and a snowmobile certainly would have been a better strategy... Day 2 was sort of like day 1. We started off at the same spot but after an hour or 2 with no bites we decided to try 5 miles south down the lake where there reports of less ice. We got toward the south end of the lake, walked about a mile to a promising looking spot on the navionics chart, which showed a 20' hump dropping to 60-100 feet on either side. The chart was pretty inaccurate tho and we drilled many holes in search of fish on the sides of the hump with one short lake trout to show for our efforts, after a bit of wind we decided to scoot closer to shore and try a shallower area in hopes of finding better action from different species (and to get out of the wind), some decent snow squalls came through in the early afternoon... the first perch was very aggressive to hit a 1/2oz spoon with a shiner head, but it is common for perch to eat very large baits relative to their size..... anyways I ended up getting lucky and hitting a 21" Laker in 17'fow after switching over to a perch pimple with a waxworm. Schroon Lake is a tough place to catch fish... stay tuned for day 3 which was the coldest windiest of the 3 days, and also the day we caught the most fish... which isn't saying much :P

Thanks for Watching!

They've been hammering them just south of the narrows I hear. I just spent last week on Paradox Lake 10 miles from Schroon. My families camp is there.

For having never fished there before and trying the first time with ice on top, I think you two did just fine.

Hey man awesome video. If you ever want to chase some smallies up there in the summer, let me know. Have a real nice spot.
  • There was someone who disliked February fishing when no one else is. That guy needs a hug and a hoagie.
  • when you first walked onto the ice... straight accross there was a white boat house.... thats where i fish. its a long walk but we catch pike and lakers there in that small cove but the white boat house. its a great place to fish. 15ft to 70ft+. try it next time!!
  • Easy way to pop out a perch eye. Take the bend of a hook and scoop under it. It'll pop right out

Gerber says the baitfish are smelt. Mikey D'avila of Lunkerville fame did a whole episode I believe it was ice fishing on Lake Champlain and they were catching smelt. Humans like em too.
