Along with humans, orangutans belong to the Hominidae family tree, which stretches back 14 million years. But it’s not just their striking red hair that makes orangutans unique among our great ape cousins. Lu Gao shares some amazing facts about these incredibly intelligent great apes from Asia.

I love how Fu Manchu escapes his cell, and just stays at the zoo and hangs out with his friends

I recently heard this story where a member of the orangutan survival foundation went into the habitat to remove a venomous snake from the nearby river, however one of the orangutans thought the man had fallen in the river and offered a helping hand up, it was quite amazing to see and just goes to show that some animals are more human than they seem.

Humans: look how orangutans are smart! Aliens: look how humans are smart!
  • I'm convinced one day orangutans will replace me and no one will know lmao Edit : I live in the middle of forests in Malaysia, its rare but we do see orangutans occasionally, and they really are smart.

It's heartbreaking that so many of these gentle creatures are getting hurt by humans... We just uploaded a video about an adventurous rescue mission, where Orangutan Nenuah – she was forced to work in a wildlife show in Thailand – is brought back to her native home, by helicopter. The moment when she felt the grass of her native forest underneath her feet for the very first time will give you goosebumps.

"Outsmarting their extinction requires creativity, empathy and foresight that our species share." What an absolutely brilliant line.
