On July 29, thousands of people protested across Venezuela after electoral authorities declared President Nicolás Maduro the winner of the disputed July 28 election. Both Maduro and opposition candidate Edmundo González claimed victory, leading to a political standoff. González and opposition leader María Corina Machado announced that they had more than 70% of the election tally sheets showing González ahead of Maduro. However, the National Electoral Council, loyal to Maduro, reported that Maduro won 51% of the vote while González received 44%. The council had not yet released machine tallies, delaying verification of results.

In Caracas, protests were mostly peaceful until national police in riot gear blocked a protest caravan, leading to clashes. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd, who responded by throwing stones and objects.
