In this episode, I dive deep into the inspection process of two old excavators with log grapples, previously used at a port for loading logs onto ships. These machines, though outdated, could be perfect for selectively and sustainably harvesting trees from my forest.

Join me as I walk you through the inspection, highlighting multiple issues I found and sharing valuable tips on what to look for when considering buying a used excavator.

🔍 Key points covered:

Overall condition and wear
Hydraulic system checks
Engine performance

  • The regret of a lost auction is always easier to stomach than winning a money pit.

Can’t see myself ever buying an excavator. But happy to have helpful assessment tips. Thanks Marty.

I love how the guy selling it says it's been serviced every 250 hours and then immediately says he doesn't know the hours

How many people buy a major headache because they cannot equate the real value and wished they had "walked" after the fact. Marty is the epitome of value to "me" thinking regardless of desire!!!!

I have no doubt Marty the machine that meets your specifications will materialize. Your patience and attention to detail will reward you with a better machine than the last two you examined.

No doubt about old diesel engines Marty, they can sit idle for years, as long as you keep the weather out, they'll usually fire up right away with a good battery. Good to see you are a "thrifty" chap and don't toss your cash around.

Imagine the wasp nests you could piss off with that grapple & enclosed cab.

Hi Marty. I’m always impressed when you say you’ve been looking for a certain machine for a few years. You definitely play the long game and play it very well. As someone who has made a few impulse purchases in the past I’m taking careful note 😊

Wants…needs a Grapple = buy and Excavator that has a grapple Love the way Marty thinks

I've always been successful at finding the perfect "thing" by being patient. Sometimes waiting a couple years. Understandable some things cannot wait but when something I've been watching hits the right price mark or is a steal, I know it is the right time.

Thanks for the visit to the pre-auction look around!!!
  • What Marty, you're looking at a machine that's not mired in a swamp? Starts right up. Moving up in the world aren't we?

My 13 year old son absolutely loves your videos, you are doing the stuff of his dreams. We have some old machinery here that would be fit for your videos haha including a Hitachi UH033 that has a motorboke fuel tank. Hes also stoked because we are in NZ too. Thanks!

I watch a site on You Tube called C & C Equipment in Indiana USA all the time. They repair BIG equipment like Bull dozers & Excavators, used Military equipment etc. When I saw the 9000 price for that old piece, I thought it was too high. The real cost of fixing that stuff (if you can still get parts) is outrageous. I think you are lucky to not own either of those, especially if they have been near water their entire lives.

You’re killing it Marty!!! You should be really proud of this channel- been watching for years! Thanks for the videos man!

Even though I don't know anything about the machines your present in your uploads, you're the only channel I have used the notification bell for. Always a pleasure. Thanks again.

Marty wears many caps, but forestry was not one I was expecting (until the previous episode) I reckon he still has a couple of years before he need a machine with a log grapple to start pulling his trees. Pity about the access to the last one, but wise to step away when you consider the limited access.

That was an awesome video, on what to look for in a used machine. And never go by what it says on the website, but visit it yourself, test it before buying it. I can't believe they went so high on the bid. But I am sure you will find one maybe in the woods 🤔 I can't wait to see what adventures you get into next. 😊

Always a good morning here on the west coast of CA, drinking my coffee and watching Marty look of a new machine. There is one waiting just down the track and we can't wait until you find it!

I like your ATTITUDE , IF you cannot establish that it's WORTH it's money do not bother risking it. Thanks for the ins & outs of the inspections.
