Published 2023-06-25
Today I discuss a "master" class in screenwriting, acting, and directing with 2012's "The Master", starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix; Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. This film is a master class in all things that make a great contemporary film. This is the first request I've got to cover a film, thank you @ Luciano for the recommendation! Brilliant review Jevin. this made me feel oh so wholesome knowing i was thought of! you done a brilliant job surmising the movie, i’m glad you’re a fan of PTA and his work. It was a great story indeed. what worked best for me was the sort of thoughts that i was contemplating after watching the movie, it was amazing to watch, but i believe even better to think about. The archetypal desire in humans to have a “master” of some sorts is what really stood out to me. i also liked how The Master had a sort of unrealised envy in his view of Freddie, purely because he was so hard to domesticate, or house train if you will. For me, Freddie represents true freedom in the world, and the master represents the opposite to that. Freddie can never be the master, and the master could never be Freddie (or free). Powerful movie. Another one that blew me away, after hating it the first 2 attempted watch throughs was Mulholland Drive. it too, is a movie i can’t seem to stop thinking about. Have you saw it? Thanks for making this, i hope it was beneficial and worthwhile to you also. Speak to you soon bro and hope you are well 💛
