An in-depth analysis of an amazing villain often overlooked, Hugo Strange. I love Strange in Arkham City, but a lot of people give him some pretty harsh flack as the main villain. So, I felt it was only right to give this beautiful bastard the love he deserves with his own amazing scene. If you have any other scenes you'd like to see me analyze, feel free to leave them in the comments!

Please don't comment that I didn't mention the tape in Crime Alley that Strange left for Bruce. That's getting it's own video later down the line.
  • I have a theory. The reason he didn't want to actually reveal Batman's identity is because he wanted to be Batman, if he revealed Bruce Wayne as Batman, he wouldn't have been able to take the mantle.

"And only his overconfidence served as his downfall." Hmm, that sounds like what happened with Emperor Palpatine.

I’d like to imagine Rocksteady took a kind of chess metaphor when it came to Hugo. The king always sits back and lets the other pieces do the work and only comes out once the other pieces are exposed. See the similarities?

Perfect analysis of the character of strange. He goes from cold and emotionless thinking that nobody is unbeatable to thinking of himself as unbeatable. He became the opposite of what he started as and at the end he was afraid to realize he was on the brink of failure. All these strings he pulled to make his plan come true came to nothing in the end because he thought too highly of himself and prepared for everything but the possibility of batman actually being able to take him down.

Strange easily gets overshadowed by a majority of Batman’s iconic rogues gallery that is present in this game, but what truly makes Strange stand out amidst the many villains present is Corey Burton’s performance, can’t stress enough just how good it is.

That’s why I love the Arkham series, each character has so much depth to them. If only look at them with a quick glance like with strange it seems like lazy writing but as soon as you take a closer look you will realize that there’s more than meets the eye.

Imagine If Deadshot killed Bruce Wayne and then spent weeks looking for batman before realizing that Strange played him

12:50 Strange also believed that catwoman only cared about sealing the loot from the vault and escaping arkham city and that she only cares about herself and wouldn't give it up to save batman in the audio files for catwoman he asked her if she could save one person tonight would it be holly or batman and she chooses holly so he thought no one would come to save batman because the one person that could would be long gone but again stranges cockyness gets the better of him

I honestly found it surprising to see Hugo Strange playing a major role in Arkham City. Even though you couldn’t see him throughout most of the game, you knew he was keeping an eye on you, along with everything that was happening. It was amazing to see everything he planned out, and you never knew who was really pulling the strings until much later down the line.

One detail I love is that when you defeat all of the Tyger Guards in the tower and before you hack the console, if you scan Hugo in Detective Mode, you can see that he’s extremely nervous. Which means he IS afraid of Batman, like you think he’s unstoppable and untouchable and when you finally confront him he’s nothing

I love the way Strange says Batman in the opening scene, it shows how powerful he feels with that information

I love Hugo Strange. I'd love for him go be the main villain of a Batman movie.
  • @AGrayPhantom
It's ironic, but had Strange NOT kidnapped Bruce Wayne, then he might have succeeded.

7:37 dang, it's crazy to think just how much strange is in control...even while he's in the middle of gaining the means to d-HANG THE FREAK ON, YOU CAN SLIDE INTO SEALED VENTS TO BREAK THEM OPEN!?
  • @starbat0428
I like how Strange was used. And Protocol Ten as well. If I could replay any arkham game for the first time, it would be this one.
  • @IbenPlaysYT
Joker's death took me by surprise. I thought it'd be another generic comic book resolution where Batman would be able to save Joker.
  • @StudMacher96
HUGO Strange is such a good character and knows so much about Batman! He really understands him and why he does what he does. And wants to do whatever he can to break him. Kinda like Scarecrow.
