NOTE: staghorn sumac can be used in much the same way as smooth sumac! Just make sure to filter out the hairs if you are making sumac-ade.
  • I was able to identify sumac in the wild thanks to your videos. The staghorn type was all over. I've only had the dried, ground version so it was cool to see the whole plant.

So my area of middle TN happens to be one of those green blips on the staghorn map. Cool. Before I found it, I thought we just had smooth and that staghorn didn't grow in my area. I had never looked at a range map for it. But we happen to have both on two different properties, which is super cool. Plus I now know they can be used interchangeably so all of the blog posts about staghorn sumac also apply to the smooth.

this was just in time, i was planning on gathering some sumac but the only one i have in my area is the fuzzy type is it still safe for consumption like smooth sumac or should i not even try?
  • Glad to know they're both safe to consume. I've never found the smooth sumac, but the staghorn grows everywhere near me
  • Love your education!! I'm an herbalist & learned many medicinal herbs but I live learning about edible wild food!❤

Make sure you still note the shape of the berry clusters, poison sumac also has smooth twigs! But it has berries that droop not come shaped
  • So the southerm end of Ulster County NY has horned sumac everywere but for an odd reason twards the northen side i do remember finding a little "grove" of the smooth sumac. we had horned in our back yard growing up i had no clue there were diffrent ones till i found that grove of smooth i was puzzled about it for a while but Your videos have helped me understand more about many plants. Thank You for everything You do.
  • I actually saw 2 wild stag horn sumac plants in Sussex county (southern county of Delaware) even though it’s outside the native range

Got Winged Sumac in my backyard, if it wasn't for your Sumac videos I never would have known what it was.
  • I've lived in MI my entire life & I've never sent the smooth type. We have the fuzzy staghorn sumac.

OMG I made a video on my channel, making Sumac-ade and it got over 1k views! But people thought it was poison lol

My grandma used to say some sumac is poisonous. She said it would give you a rash like poison ivy. What do you think she was talking about?
