Paul Franklin is arguably the greatest modern innovator of the pedal steel guitar. Like his hero, Buddy Emmons, he has taken the pedal steel to new technical heights and exposed the instrument to many genres outside of country music. In Part 2 our Truetone Lounge interview, we discuss his new streaming “The Paul Franklin Method” lesson system, Paul’s triadic approach to soloing, and some of the ins-and-outs for the beginner wanting to get into the pedal steel. We also discuss his Little Walter Amp, Franklin Steel, Benado effect unit, and Eminence PF350 signature model 12” speaker.

Carol Kay from the Wrecking Crew teaches Jazz the same way. Chordal scale tones. She also started on jazz guitar from the Oahu door to door salesman. She mastered the steel and was playing jazz guitar in South Central L.A.with all the Jazz greats. Thats where she met the great Earl Palmer. It all started with her Oahu salesman.

Paul is also kind enough to throw out little nuggets on the Steel Forum that are tremendously helpful and influential for learning players like me. Thanks Paul!

  • (First time I heard Paul play Nervous Breakdown I bout had a nervous breakdown!) If Jerry wasn’t hard enough to play already! lol I always love his playing! I played in a band with the great pedal steel guitarist Walter Haynes for 9 years. He taught me so much. What a pleasure it was to stand beside him 5 & 6 nights a week. We played w Johnny Paycheck in spring of 93. What a fabulous experience! One time I was at Walt’s house and he had Buddy on the speaker phone & introduced me to him. It was like a dream come true. Buddy pretty much bragged on Walt’s playing the entire call. He told me that Walt helped him get his start with Little Jimmy. Buddy was so far out there-on a different planet.. I had to tell him that the Red Neck Jazz stuff changed my life. He laughed when I told him that he and Danny sounded like Jimmy & Speedy on crack Cocaine. I still can’t believe I said that. Young & dumb back then lol God rest their souls 🙏🏻
