Candling Chicken Eggs - Day 5

Published 2023-06-16
Why candle eggs in incubation? To know if there are any that are not developing and need to be removed. If bad eggs are left in the incubator, they can explode and cause issues for the other eggs in development.

In this case, Egg# 2 had a small crack... visible only when candling. However, this generally means it will not develop. On day 5, it had no veins like the others, was sloshy inside the egg when slightly turned, and the image was noticeably brighter than the others. These are all good indicators of failed development. The egg was candled again a couple days later, and with no signs of improvement, it was firmly tossed in the compost bin.

Day 5, Day 10, and Day 14 candling seems to be when most check their eggs. When some appear to start out well, the development can suddenly cease and those will need to be removed as well.
