When the Nord Stream pipelines carrying natural gas from Russia to Germany were damaged last September, U.S. officials were quick to suggest Russia had bombed its own pipelines. But according to a new report by the legendary investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, it was the U.S. Navy that carried out the sabotage, with help from Norway. Citing a source "with direct knowledge of the operational planning," Hersh writes on his Substack blog that planning for the mission began in December of 2021. The White House and the Norwegian government have since denied the claims. Hersh joins us for an in-depth interview to discuss his report and says the U.S. decision to bomb the pipelines was meant to lock allies into support for Ukraine at a time when some were wavering. "The fear was Europe would walk away from the war," he says. Hersh won a Pulitzer Prize in 1970 for his reporting on the My Lai massacre. His reporting on CIA spying on antiwar activists during the Vietnam War era helped lead to the formation of the Church Committee, which led to major reforms of the intelligence community, and in 2004, he exposed the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal in Iraq.

The fact that no major news paper publishers published this piece speaks volumes of the state of news in the US

What's the point of asking the government, when you've seen them lie in the past?

This is the best report wrapped in a speech by Seymour Hersh. My deepest respect. I'm born 19 years after him. But he is not an old man with an aging spirit, I regret that I ever allowed myself to think along that line. This man is excellent! Nevertheless - if all that is really true - I'm not even asking for the source. America has indeed destroyed a pipeline to Europe, motivated by two major arguments: 1. the fear that Germany might giver a green light to Russia to open it again and 2. To be in control of gas deliveries to Europe - in effect to make money and cancel the cheap gas coming from Russia. That is mind blowing! Divers down 260 feet, mines placed (1 mile apart), divers up, decompression chamber, remote ignition of all mines. Make a run for it. I wonder now what is the future of NATO and can that lead to nuclear war? I am very concerned it may. Biden is now exactly in the position the he accused the Russians of. He is now in control of "weaponizing" natural gas. He has destroyed a vital pipeline for Germany and - if true - will soon offer American gas to Germany at a higher price than the Russians. It is mind blowing!

These are the most dangerous people in the world right now, holding that same world hostage by its blunt aggression and lies. Hearing Jake Sullivan and Victoria Nuland accuse another regime of the exact same thing they themselves are doing, that is, by accusing the enemy of the same thing they themselves are doing, right in the face of the German chancellor who willingly takes it, sends chills down my spine.

What's really frustrating were the amount of people in America who strongly argued that Russia took out its own pipeline when it made no logical sense. The mental gymnastics displayed was even crazier than the WMD claims in Iraq. People always let their emotions cloud their judgement no matter the generation or the information we have access to.

Thank you Mr. Hersh for speaking up. We in Europe have brainwashed politicians who believe in the benevolent of Us. But we have been betrayed! Greetings from Switzerland!
  • I was shocked the US who told the world they were gonna end the pipeline, and celebrated the pipeline being blown up, actually blew up the pipeline

I think what is more disconcerting about this is the fact they lie, they know they will be called out and they just don't care.
  • The reaction of Ned Price was....priceless. He does a really bad job of lying.

As a french citizen, I really want to thank you about that. There's absolutely no media down here talking about that, even if our future depends on it.
