A review/analysis of the Last of Us Episode 6. I primarily look at Joel and Ellie's heartbreaking confrontation and the overall acting from Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey is phenomenal. Based on the 2013 video game developed by Naughty Dog, the series follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States.

  • I wish my wife talked about me, the way you talk about this show. 😂 Great episode.

"I wasnt scared until I met you" Bill to Frank, foreshadowing how Joel will feel about Ellie.
  • Some say it "lacks more action" ..But if the show do more actions, those same people will say "too much plot armor" ..Humans are truly fascinating

My favorite part was when Ellie rested her head against Joel’s back while they were on the horse. So subtle but such a sweet moment.

pascal's acting in this episode was too fucking good. the way he conveys the long lasting trauma he's had from losing sarah on his face and spilling all of his bottled up emotions to tommy, the one person he trusts, about how he's scared. i felt sick the whole time. such an amazing episode and i can't wait for the rest of the season.

There is no heartbreaking death in this episode, yet I cry because of how warm and emotional it is. That's how good the writing is.

This also explains why episode 3 was so important, it wasn’t just the letter it was the idea of “not being afraid until you showed up”. And now Joel’s afraid, overwhelmingly so
  • As a person with panic disorder, their representation of how and when panic attacks develop is so accurate. It made me so emotional to watch, I was incredibly impressed to see myself so clearly in Joel this episode.

Glad you touched a good bit on the Joel/Tommy scene where Pedro is absolutely acting his ass off. Seeing Joel that vulnerable was heart wrenching. Possibly my favorite scene in the show so far.
  • This is definitely Pedro's best performance since Oberyn Martell

The old couple being unusually calm tells me they’ve already been held at gun point too many times and don’t care anymore
  • @bobbyb2749
The couple in the beginning of the episode deserve their own sitcom
  • Joel's monologue was so raw and heart-wrenching. Pedro nailed that. He nails that repressed built-up turmoil and wow the way it all bubbles over as he says "All I do is fail"??? Wow man

To play devil's advocate, I interpreted Ellie running away in the game as her trying to make Joel come after her. She doesn't hide when Joel and Tommy show up. She says "I'm up here." It's a childish reaction, but I feel like it makes sense for Ellie's in-game character. They played the confrontation really well in the show. I just think that her escape in the game definitely held more significance than "to introduce more gameplay."
  • I weirdly appreciated them not showing Ellie overhearing Joel’s conversation with Tommy. They show her outside so you know it’s possible but refrain from actually showing it. I appreciate the restraint
  • When Joel broke crying down while talking to his brother, it really hit me. As a middle-aged man who has slowed down more than a step, the thought of not being able to protect my family hurts

I dig vulnerable Joel. I remember the last scene in part 2 where ellie wanted to try to forgive Joel. That was absolutely amazing but if there's anything I'd like to change there, is to see Joel more vulnerable and more expressive of his feelings rathen than hiding it 24/7.

The dog sniffing scene, Joel is panicking because he is reminded of how he fail Sarah in a similar situation. The dog is there because Jackson people don't have a scanner to test for infection. Everytime he has a panic attack it's in situation when he feels he can't protect Ellie.

I also love all the various references to the Part 2 in this episode. One is Ellie saying she wanted to go to space. Second is Joel saying he wants to get a farm, which is actually what Dina says she wants to do in Part 2. Speaking of Dina, she's the girl in the cafeteria, which was awesome. Also, when Tommy talks about his true description of his sniper rifle and Ellie asks him to teach her. That's a flashback from the second game. Lastly is Ellie's horse, Shimmer.

I've never played the game so I have nothing to compare it to. It stands alone as a great drama so the writers did a great job.
