An elaborate coronation ceremony was held Saturday, May 4, 2019 in Thailand as the country crowned its new king, the first monarch it has seen in nearly seven decades.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn was officially crowned as a "divine monarch" after completing intricate Buddhist and Brahmin rituals and said in a speech that he would "reign with righteousness."

He was joined by new Queen Suthida after a surprise announcement three days before the coronation that he had married a fourth time.

  • Even though the king is not that respected amongst Thai people (he's a complete joke compared to his father before him), this is still a great once in a lifetime ceremony. It's great to see the ancient culture being preserved and brought back to life. There will be another ceremony soon in October, which the king will make a traditional trip on the Royal Barge along with other members of the Royal Family (each on a different barge). The tradition is shared in a few Southeast Asian countries and it has been passed down for 600 years. It will be another great spectacle.

I still love the late King Rama 9. This new king is way too different from his highly respected and well loved father. I hope the sacred water would have really washed off the womanizer and extravagance in him.

Culturally perspective, this is a very unique sight. 1. Delicate crafts show case. Normally Cartier or modern jewelry Business would take over while this ceremony show a very unique and delicate pieces of art. 2. Lost or endangered crafts are presented. For example flowers garlands, fresh harvest cravings details are crazy. These people have a special job and their job are known to those who participated. 3. With the whole ceremony base on Buddhism-Hinduism, historically this is spectacular. How they interpret the "Rama" figure and materialize this whole thing.

It seems Thai Royals preserve traditional religious ceremony and that is really good. Japanese imperials had to give up most of religious part of the coronation ceremony as national ceremony because of the principle of separation of politics and religion. Very traditional and religious one called Daijoh-Sai still exists and will be held this autumn along with national ceremony called Sokuirei but treated as very secret and private ceremony.

I am Malaysian, proud of Thais who conserving the Thai Kings installation tradition. Can only see the old footage of King Bhumibol coronation. Now I can see this for hours. Very interesting ceremony. Proud of seeing Thais doing the best for their new King. I don't care much of Kings previous life. He deserves his own private life like us as well.
