Information for the Mason Bees is from the sign post in Coquitlam's Inspiration Garden (the Pollinator Hotel).
See below:
"Orchard Mason Bees (Osmia Lignaria)"
"This wooden structure, styled like an ancient Roman building, is home to hundreds of solitary Mason Bees. Mason Bees do not form social hives, build honeycombs, or make honey like Honeybees. Mason Bees are non-aggressive and won't sting unless handled roughly, which makes them ideal for an urban setting."
"Native to Western Canada, Mason Bees will tolerate cool, wet weather and emerging from their cocoons in late March or early April when the first fruit trees begin to flower and remain active until late May."
"We Need More Bees"
"Bees are vital to our food supply; 1/3 of the fruits and vegetables we eat are pollinated by bees. Smaller than honeybees, Mason Bees are better pollinators; pollinating up to 1600 flowers in one day compared to 30 flowers pollinated by a Honeybee."
"With populations of Honeybees declining due to disease and pest infestations, Mason Bees are an increasingly important link in our food chain. You can encourage their activity by releasing Mason Bee cocoons in your yard and by providing a nesting block in which they can live and lay their eggs. The best location for a Mason Bee house is south facing with protection from rain. Mason Bees prefer to forage for pollen within about 300 feet of their nests, it is best if flowering plants and fruit trees are nearby."
"This Mason Bee house was donated to the Inspiration Garden by Pascale and Rob Gnocato, who built the house from an original design. They would encourage you to take a moment to observe these fascinating insects at work!"
