hello. I just wanna point out how great this song is: the rhythm used in the chorus (where every instrument plays these two, loud hits) is a common rhythm in rock music. It‘s usually meant to remind the listeners of heartbeats. But it’s almost always used for something dramatic or sad like in heart shaped box for example. but in this song it’s used for something sweet and positive and I never realized how good heartbeats suit a positive meaning.

I feel like this song is about Robbie's identity as an aromantic. The song starts off with the lyrics "Feeling sick of myself, think I'll try to be someone else." There's also lyrics that seem to be about making up a lover, or forcing himself to "like" someone. The rest of the song doesn't really describe a partner, but just how "love" feels. The line "I like you, say it back" could either be him wanting someone to like him back so it's easier to pretend not to be aromantic, or it could be a quote from another person who wants him to like them, even though he can't.
