Hello Friends!
This is a 30x60 gallery wrapped level 3 canvas that was a commission I did for a lovely couple in Los Angeles. It now hangs above the couch in their amazing home, and compliments the exquisite decor.

Technique:
Straight pour, dirty cup
NO SILICONE

Pouring Medium:
Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish, combined with paint, water added as needed, then Floetrol added.

Colors:
Golden's Payne's Grey
DecoArt Americana Decor Metallics in 24K
Liquitex Basics Pthalo Blue
DecoArt Americana Decor Metallics in Zinc

Basecoat:
DecoArt Americana Decor Satin Enamels in Neutral Beige
White Behr Housepaint
Artists Loft Flow Acrylic white

I initially used the Zinc in the first cup I poured, but didn't like it, so I didn't use it in any of the other 10 cups after that. I put a drizzle of white on top of my first cup as well, but decided that there was enough white in the basecoat, so I didn't use the white in my pour cups either. I started with 5 colors but only poured with 3!

I prepared and poured 8 five ounce Dixie cups and 3 nine ounce cups onto my basecoat in a medallion pattern inspired by the central medallion design in a Persian rug in my living room. When I was very little my family imported Persian Rugs and I grew up playing on stacks of them, and always loved the center medallion surrounded by floral vines, so I used that as inspiration for the pattern in this piece.
I tilted to distribute the paint evenly and to cover the corners, then focused on the composition.

This piece took more than 90 minutes to pour and tilt, so we have sped up some of the footage to save some time.

One very cool effect of increasing the speed is that you can very clearly see the weight of the paint flowing across the canvas in waves.. beautiful fluid dynamics in motion!

I love the way this piece turned out. It dried perfectly, and when it was cured, I applied a few coats of Golden's Archival Varnish spray as an additional varnish, since the Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish already had varnish in it.

I really enjoyed making this piece, it was fun preparing my paints and planning my colors. I hope you enjoy watching the creation video of 'Medallions'.

  • Takes my breath away gorgeous! A great learning lesson in large pours, too. Thank you, Mina

Love your courage, the results and especially being able to complete a pour on your knees! Mine would have protested after two cups. I want to do a large canvas like that some day. Thank you for sharing. Beautiful!
  • You are so cute. I have never done a canvas this large. Your painting has inspired me. Now I need to find some place large enough. This turned out beautiful. Thank you for sharing
  • @adamaepg413
Beautiful as always. Love how the gold extended out. And the grays blended.
  • I think this is another wonderful piece that you have done, my favourite part has to be the left hand side, the blending is beautiful.
