Shifting powers - NATO and the Global South | DW Documentary

NATO calls itself the strongest and most successful defense alliance in the world. But this view is not universal. Countries in Africa and Asia regard the organization with skepticism and distrust, accusing it of double standards and hypocrisy.

Russia’s war on Ukraine has further divided the world and revealed a deep disconnect between NATO countries and the so-called Global South. The West considers Russia’s aggression as a blatant violation of international law. Emerging powers like India or South Africa, however, refuse to cut ties with the Kremlin.

The documentary analyses how the disconnect came about and what the prevailing perspectives are in Africa and Asia. Can the West write the concerns off as pure Russian disinformation? Or is the mistrust of NATO - a defense alliance formed 75 years ago - deeply rooted in its own history and actions? We speak to decision makers and advisors in South Africa and India, but also in the US and Europe, about the different views of Russia's war in Ukraine and NATO's support for Kyiv.

The film seeks answers on whether there can be a path to reconciliation between NATO and the NATO-skeptical countries in the Global South. And what role - if any - the NATO alliance can play in an emerging multipolar world.

You know its joke when you see someone like John Bolton being interviewed.

NATO is about regional security not global security. Don't lie Mr. Stoltenberg.
  • “NATO calls itself the strongest defense alliance in the world …” is the opening line of this video 🤦🏽‍♂️ defending against Libya ? Kosovo ? Syria ? Iraq ? when did Saddam Hussein invade Europe ? when did Gaddaffi ? NATO is the military wing of the USA’s empire and as the USA collapses (like all empires do … the Romans, Napoleon, the British empire, the USSR …) it’s time to put NATO to bed 😴

The simple fact that DW interviewed John Bolton and included his opinion is a joke. He is a war hawk and jumps at the opportunity to spill blood.

  • 8:30 Again, hypocrissy: "The way the west sees it, every country should have the right to choose its own allies and not to bow to great powers seeking to maintain spheres of interest." Now correct me if I'm wrong, but NATO is pretty upset with Iran, Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, N. Korea and India choosing their allies. Maybe I'm wrong but didn't Stoltenberg say just today and NATO claimed in their summit statement that China can't be friends with Russia, in other words. That is to say NATO, a great power, told China to bow down and only make friends with who NATO says it can? And from what I've seen in the headlines, the US amabassador to India had some choice words for his counterparts because of India visiting Moscow this week. This video is just full of endless contradictions and hypocrisy. There's not enough strenght in my keyboard warrior fingers to respond to each and every one of the contradictions.
