Raise your hand if managing mealtime feels overwhelming (everyone rasies their hands).

Now, throw in trying to eat healthily and balance other responsibilities, and it suddenly feels like a full-time job. So, I'm sharing how I went from mealtime overwhelm to discovering a system to make cooking for my family of five feel a lot more manageable without sacrificing health for convenience. One crucial strategy is to order groceries weekly to avoid over-purchasing as well as regularly stocking and organizing my pantry, keeping frequently used items accessible and minimizing less essential snacks. Additionally, setting aside a specific time for meal prep, like Sundays, helps me stay on top of dinner during the busy weeks. Also doubling recipes and freezing meals is another effective way to quickly prepare dinner on hectic days.

  • 🎉Fun Little Announcement🍾 But First, Coffee is now "That Practical Mom" Over a decade ago I started a little blog as a fun hobby to keep myself busy over the summer. Affectionately naming it "But First, Coffee" because it was the early 2010's after all. And I can't say I was exactly expecting it to become a full time business. Fast forward and here we are 😅 While I have a lot of nostalgia for my little blog's first name, the name hasn't felt like it has fit me for years. And after putting it off for awhile (because change it hard) I've finally made the leap to rename my brand something that better suits what I share and what my goals and aspirations are for what I plan to continue to share. So meet, "That Practical Mom" 🥳 🤗 Not much will be changing here but the name! You can expect all the same kinda content. Excited for this new chapter and to continue to share content that will help you simplify the chaos of everyday life ❤

I’ve heard it said that the most stressful part of adulting is food: planning, shopping, cooking, cleaning up afterwards, only to do it again, three times a day, forever. 😳🤨
  • Hey guys, I'm the generation that's older than you all and meal prepping and meal planning REALLY does actually save time, energy and money.
  • Fun tip for decanting flour. Pop the empty container over the bag so the opening of the bag is at the bottom of the container. Flip the container (with the bag of flour now completely inside it) right side up and pull out the bag of flour. No more cloud of flour!
  • If you're like me don't feel bad about the "just in case items" I buy them in bulk when on sale, put them in the freezer then have them on hand when I need them. I plan for meals according to what's on sale and make due with whatever is on sale along with those just in case items to balance things out. I absolutely love everything else but know that for me the buying things in bulk just in case works better for me especially with not always being able to get out to shop due to disabilities and not able to afford delivery.

To save time. I clean out my fridge the day before my grocery pick-up day. Helps in case of any last minute items I may need to add to my list.
  • Congratulations on the name switch. Meal prepping changed my life. My nutritional choices were bad for my body and I had to unlearn everything I knew about feeding myself. It lead to a new life in which I prep my ingredients, plan ahead, and cook two big meals a week which are frozen in quart containers to give me maximum variety while only spending about 4 hours in the kitchen twice a week and about 30 minutes daily pulling out ingredients for 3 meals and putting them together. Literally, it takes me longer to eat my meals than it does to put them together each day. I saved my life and a TON of money, and liberated my time to redirect it to painting and other things that give my life meaning.
  • I still get coffee first but I like the new name "That Practical Mom", because practical moves as a homemaker makes more sense. Thanks for sharing.

One way I learned to really cut down on time making dinner is to cook the ground beef or turkey, even chicken, season it, then portion it out and store it in a sandwich size ziplock bag in the freezer. I also cut most of my veggies, portioned them out and stored them in the freezer. This was a huge time saver for me.
  • Would love if you did a video on what you ate for the week, breakfast, lunch and dinner. We get to see your meal plan and also the prep work etc. I struggle with breakfast & lunch ideas that are healthy but easy!!
  • @ladygreen351
Change is definitely hard. It’ll take me a minute to get over the fact that you are no longer the face of “But First Coffee”, but my favorite part of watching you is your authenticity. It’s always fun to watch you grow. Thank you for doing you because it’s been helping me a lot too! :)

I am an uber organizer, so years ago (after my then boyfriend now husband started living together) I got feed up of each week going to the grocery store and standing there asking each other “what do what what to eat this week?” And getting “I don’t know…” I decided to meal plan. It has been the best thing ever! Has saved my sanity! I now know what we are having each day, I purchased only the stuff we need and avoid the extras that can go to waste. Over time, I have gotten more organized (this takes time and work) and looked for deals and specials and meal planned based on that. This is something that takes effort, but the time, energy, and frustration it saves is well worth it!

this is such great content about meal prepping. You forgot one big win that you were achieving. You are being an example to your kids and letting them see you prepping washing, caring, cutting, and doing all this for the family is such a wonderful example and they will remember it all their lives. so you are educating. EDUCATING ❤ Nutrition and family love. 💕 my most vivid memories of my mother or her in the kitchen and we all were running around doing stuff. Now I realize I probably wasn’t being all that helpful, but I really felt like it was at the time and it is such a lasting memory. Today I love working in the kitchen and I have to thank my mom for all of that. ✅
  • Hi Kallie! Love your channel! I am a 54 year old mother, who works full time, and has a 9 yr old and a 7 yr old. So, when I get home I am exhausted…my husband helps when he can because he works full time too. I have struggled so much with trying to think of what to cook when I get home and it makes everything more chaotic especially when it’s so easy to say let’s grab fast food, pizza, etc. This month I meal planned and did 2 freezer meals (so far) but just with the meal planning alone I feel less stressed and I’m not yelling at everyone when I get home 🤣
  • @barbkandel777
I save so much money by meal planning and using what's in our kitchen, first! I also meal prep on the weekends. This is such a great video, Kallie! ❤❤❤
  • @dru2506
Off topic, but I'm so happy you have three babies when I know how much you guys struggled to get the first. You're great parents.
  • @mariahr673
  • @sheenatalks8529
I love this too!! PLUS another benefit is less dishes to wash! Instead of washing a knife and cutting board every evening when making dinner, you only need to wash it on prep day (maybe 2-3 times during the day but still much easier)! So youre saving water, soap, time, etc!
  • @JanayDiamond
I love your channel. I enjoy crocheting and listening to you chat about whatever. ❤Thank you.
