In this video I completely restore and bolt mod an abandoned IBM Model M that has been sitting since 1994 in an abandoned mental asylum that was repurposed into a data center in the late 1980s. After 4 months of using this keyboard, I have to say that the hype is real. This really is one of the best feeling keyboards out there and is a joy to type on. Glad I saved it, otherwise it would've either been destroyed when they take the building down or destroyed by vandals.

  • This feels like one of those videos about nursing an abused pet back to health.

DUDE! this video is my savior :) I had an old IBM Model M in my dads attic piling up dust for who know how long. I later found out that he had worked in IT for 20 years back in the 80's with a guy name Tom Gore. He told me I could have the keyboard and so now I'm here wanting to refurbish this old thing but not knowing how. I decided to search the internet for answers but with no results. So after 3 years I decided to come back to this project and to my surprise, stumbled upon this video. I am currently working on the project and will hopefully get it finished this time. Great video btw keep up the great content!

i would exclude that girl on the next expedition lmao great job on the keyboard i found an 88 one myself abandoned at work not near as bad as yours considering the last person that used to put it in a plastic bag with the cord nicely put around was missing the top caps for f11 and =+ easy fix from clicky keyboards for replacements been using it for a year as a daily amazing keyboard still plastic rivets and rainbow plate i have super glued the rivets to prevent them from falling out as only 5 have fell out of the bottom wich was an easy fix and i tried doing that exact thing trying to fit a socket into that hole had to order a nut driver myself too hope this keyboard serves you well!

you know a keyboard is good that it still feels amazing after being so dirty it was black instead of the original beige.

I love this, bro. Good on you for making old shit work again. That's one thing kept out of the landfill and something you can use for gaming. Keep up the good work!

Someone ABANDONED a Model M???? SACRILEGE! You have some SERIOUS patience because, if it were me, I'd have sent it off to Unicomp for a complete restoration. LOL This remonds meof one of those heartbreaking videos where people find a neglected and abused dog who is near death and they nurse it back to health. I'm glad you gave it a good home. Cheers!

This keyboard gives off a retro vibe to your setup, in a good way.

These keyboards will still be used in the Zombie/Post Apocoliptic future. WHAT BUILD QUALITY! Nice job on the restoration. It's a shame little is made today that anyone will ever want to restore.

I also got one from a place in south east new york, I walked into this amphitheater section and saw it and immediately say "oh my god is that an IBM model m keyboard?". My friends looked at me like I was crazy, Still have to restore mine. Looks decently easy to do, Thanks for your help.

I bolt-modded one of mine. The easy part was drilling the holes -- my grandfather has an excellent workshop, including a drill press. The hard part was my tendency to forget (or even completely lose) springs. I must have taken it completely apart 15 times before I finally got everything right.
