Vocal Coach Analysis: AURORA sings "Runaway", live at the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize Concert

Published 2023-10-16
Even though I've heard of this singer before, I have never really listened to her at all. Thanks to a suggestion from one o my subscribers, I decided to do a blind analysis of her performing this huge song of hers.

I must say, I understand het huge following after watching this live performance. And, I am also keen to go and check out more of her work, as I find her intriguing.

Let me know what you think... are you a fan? Is her live performance as good as her studio version?

She wrote this song at 11. she is self taught and she goes away to another place when she sings. She was 19 in this performance and really nervous. Dont think she had performed that much before this consert, shes one of a kind!

Aurora is a musical genius. If your only going to go by a black/white analytical perspective you will miss the magic. She's pure art.

Definitely listen to her sing 'through the eyes of a child' live at Nidarosdomen which is the oldest Cathedral in Norway and the acoustics are as insanely gorgeous as her performance. It really highlights the range of her voice and will give you chills. It's actually made a lot of reactors cry, she evokes such emotion...she touches your soul. ❤
  • I confess, I'm an Aurora addict. She is best live as each performance is a reinterpretation, some times radically. She sees this world in a different way, hence the lyrics and the intensity of performance reflect that she is her song. The lyrics of this one also show her age when she wrote it, 11. Her concert at the Nidarosdomen is a masterpiece. Mainly her originals but some wonderful covers.

What does it matter what she is or isn't wearing on her feet or how she looks? Is this still a vocal analysis?

She wasn't aware of her movements and was shocked when it was pointed out to her and she saw herself later. Her movements are more flowing these days, but she still moves a lot. She cant help it 😊. She does make some pop songs, but makes a lot of different version, and some of my favorite performances are just with a guitar or piano and maybe someone on harmonies. Constantly evolving artist, and her latest album is always the best in my opinion.

She wrote part of these lyrics at age 9. I believe she's 19 here... Her sister designs her clothes. She's on the spectrum, so she has always experienced and expressed herself in unique way. Compelling. Seeing her live truly takes you on a journey in her world. I love her lyrics and melodies. Exist for love makes you giddy. Lucky pulls on your emotions in a different way. The seed gives energy and power. She is truly a performer. But she herself says that she is truly herself when she creates and writes music. She describes performing as just being a wessel for the music that flows through her.

Her real name is Aurora Aksnes and she is a singer and songwriter from Norway, and she was 19 here even though she looks younger, and she is 27 today. She had been performing for 1.5 years at this point, but she still didn't fully enjoy it, she said later in interviews. She was still very nervous, and this was her biggest performance so far with ~8000 people in the venue and being broadcast on TV as well (not sure if live or not). She was a songwriter first (and dancer), and she never really planned to be a singer. Her movements are somewhat involuntary and a way to express her feelings that she gets from the music, and during 2016 and later when she got more used to performing, she turned them into voluntary movements and dancing. She writes all her music and lyrics, and has released 3 albums and 2 EPs so far, and now she is currently working on the 4th album. I suggest her song "Through The Eyes of a Child", and she did a pure a cappella performance of the song in March 2016, the video is also called Vevo UK Lift on her main channel, where she and her band members are doing amazing harmonies. Also "It Happened Quiet" live at The Current, it is an acoustic performance from March 2019 with incredible vocals from both Aurora and her backup singer Silja Sol, I've seen several vocal coaches reacting to this one.

Im 73……love music and recently stumbled upon her…….excellent

I think all the quirks you hear is her emotions in the song taking form. This song no matter how many times I hear it brings so much emotion forward that I’m brought to tears. Aurora is just one of a kind and a beautiful vocalist and song writer.

Really enjoyed your reaction to Aurora. You are very much correct when saying she is natural when performing and as you continue you will see and hear just what a wonderfully unpretentious person she is. Would love you to watch her performance of It Happened Quiet -Live at the Current or perhaps Through the Eyes of a Child -Live stripped at Vevo. But really anything you choose will be fantastic because everything she does is worthy of your time! Looking forward to future reactions!!
  • @Smaugyyy
Nice reaction! Interesting that you say that she appears to you as an experienced performer. It was her first performance in front of such a big audience, and she was very nervous. 19 here. But then, she is a genius. A free spirit. Experience her live! And listen to her messages. She is as authentic as it gets. Quirky as you say, but one of a kind. Truly unique. The murder song from the same concert you need to watch. Then the backstage interview to get an idea of her personality.

Aurora's a gift to the world. Tears fall so unintentionally when I listen to her. Authentic - great word choice. ❤

Thanks for this great reaction. Aurora is my all time favorite multi talented artist and you are spot on calling her authentic and quirky, that is part of the reason we Aurora fans love her so much. Also, movement is a big part of her life, she loves to dance and she took 10 years of dance lessons as a child, also, she just lives the song, especially in her early years of performing, it was her disconnect from being uncomfortable performing. She now embraces live performances and her movements are much more fluid and graceful. Looking forward to more Aurora on your channel.

I'm always amazed by her way to immerse herself into her songs and offer us awesome deliverings, as powerful as it is beautiful and full of subtlety. For her first time, so young then, in such a large venue, this singing little moth is just dazzling!🙂 Thanks for this nice reaction to Aurora, this so endearing and talented little Giant.🙂👍

Thank you for reaction. I love this Artist. And she is very natural artist - including that she does not have music education and she just started to learn all by herself to make music, to play piano, to sing. She even did not wanted to be an artist just used music to express her emotions and she love to create something. She is very artistic and creative person. She started to write music when was 6 and to make English lyrics from 9 years old (she is from Norway). I love many things in her music but this things including her voice and voice tone, expressiveness, emotions she shows and transmit and original sounds (as you said she is somewhere popy in some of her songs, but it is different kind of pop :) ). She is very original and artistic even outside the scene. She has a lot of great songs (not like only several great ones) - for me it is generally her whole discography:).
