An enormous tower filled with 100 tons of bronze bells, some the size of a car, that you play with a massive keyboard at the top of the tower.

Joey Brink is the University Carillonneur at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel at the University of Chicago: rockefeller.uchicago.edu/the-carillon
They give tours of the Carillon Thursday through Friday btw!

  • Rob: So do any of these chime on the hour? Joey: Ye- All the bells: ANOTHER HOUR OF OUR EXISTENCE HAS OCCURRED, SUFFER AS WE SING THE SONG OF OUR KIND
  • Imagine being in this town during the recording. You’re just going about your day then suddenly the church bells start having a seizure for half an hour before you hear them stop and then start playing for whom the bell tolls

My college has a set of carillon bells. 48. I managed to take a class on it and we got to bring in our own music to play. Thing is that we didn't have practice bells so to practice, we had to schedule time slots to go up and play it. We picked out two songs for midterms and finals and played them respectively for our professor, the main carillonneur at the time. I absolutely loved hearing others play even if they messed up. I remember walking to class in pouring rain one day and someone in the tower played 2-2 from Mario. It made my miserable walk so much better!
  • So inspirational to hear about Joey making a brave decision to pursue this art over his engineering career. He seems very happy. Safe to say he probably made the right choice. What an incredibly talented and charming human.

The sign of a true professional is how eagerly they share their craft, and Joey is most certainly a professional! He's got an infectious smile and an obvious love for his unique craft

So beautiful seeing musicians click with each other. It's like another language is being spoken in the room.
