A review/analysis of episode 4 of The Last of Us taking a look at why it's still a great episode despite it being slow. This episode is not comprised of filler lol. Based on the 2013 video game developed by Naughty Dog, the series follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States.

  • Joel was literally in a gun fight, a car crash, almost died, and Ellie helped him murder someone. This episode never felt slow to me for a second
  • My only issue with this episode was that Joel didn’t say “he ain’t even hurt” it’s such an awesome line
  • The last of us is joel and Ellie, that is the show, that is the plot. This episode was great, slow but it needed to be.
  • My biggest complaint with episode 4 was it too short. Only 47 minutes. That and Kathleen wasn't nearly as intimidating as I expected.

I don't see how anyone can call it a filler episode. This was another epic part of the game, and everything from the puns to the laughter, to the hunters, and to meeting Henry and Sam, everything contributed to the story.
  • Kathleen seems very realistic, in our current world it seems the people who simply have the drive to lead... get to where they're going. It doesn't matter how cool you look, it's more about the drive to lead and the willingness to never give up. They could have had another actress with a visually appealing look, but I think in this new world folks just don't have their top priority being cool looking. The more real you seem the more people will follow you because they can relate to you. The stakes of being a leader in this story doesn't come with benefits, you either do it or not and if you fail people die. So that kinda empties the plate of folks who just want to try being a leader and replaces them with people who will do what is absolutely in their own interest. I like that she's not cool, not striking in appearance and just a person who simply has the will.

People can't help but knit pick at amazing content. The writing goes beyond expectations, especially when it comes to the details of Ellie and Joel's relationship growth.
  • Honestly episode 4 may be my favorite because their bonding is so sweet. By the end of the episode they’re laughing like kids at a sleepover. After Ellie saves Joel’s life, they have a long bonding conversation that really contributes to the plot.
  • Episodes like this one and Episode 3 are needed in a great show that emotionally connects you to the story and its characters. Action and thrilling scenes are needed and necessary, but not all the time. This show has a perfect balance of world/character-building and tension/action.
  • I will preserve my judgment for the Kathleen character for ep 5. The fact that she is like your friends' mom make it more realistic cuz these are normal ppl that just overturn Fedra, sometime in the real world not many leader look like a leader at first. To me she even felt selfish and only care about revenge when ignore the moving pit and assume Joel and Ellie is Henry allies.
  • Idk I still loved the episode because... Pedro being a dad is all I need and I love how they're getting closer with Ellie <3 don't mind the slower pace at all

While it may be slow moving, with no much action happening, it's still very captivating, and helps us to get to know the characters better.
  • It was our first full on Joel n' Ellie episode. It was very necessary. And it's probably a good thing to not have a tragedy in each episode. (Well, okay, except for poor Brian)
  • If one of those episode was filler, it was 3 lmao. But I don't get how people can say a 10 ep season can have fillers. Not every ep needs a buttload of action, 3 main character deaths and one epic fight.
  • I think Kathleen is probably meant as a character who likely never wanted to be a leader, but despite being soft-spoken, she gets stuff done and keeps things organized. She also seems quite intelligent and clever, but like many in her group, as we see with Brian going after Joel after Joel shot his friend, she is driven in large part by vengeance, despite their main target already being defeated.
  • I personally loved this episode. Great character interactions, some tension and my favorite scene from this ep was when Ellie and Joel were about to fall asleep towards the end of the episode
  • I wish we could get more before episode scenes showing how initial outbreak looked like. These were clearly the nests scenes in whole show
  • @Moreinius
Literally half of the game and the main point of the game is the bonding of Joel and Ellie. This is the main content.
  • On Kathleen - you might have missed the point. In the podcast, the writers said that the uneasiness we feel towards her and her lack of badassery and confidence is the point, as she's not supposed to be this badass hardcore leader. Her followers might also already question her legitimacy and choices, as Jeffrey does in this episode. We are so used to the archetype of the badass manly confident leader that nobody questiones in media that most people fail to see what they were doing with her in this episode.
