In this video I'll be trying to repair an incredibly expensive Dell Ultrasharp U3011 I found at e-waste so I can use it along side 2 other Ultrasharp U2711's that I also found as my local dump. It's a long video guys, sorry about that. I shot it earlier on this year when I was fairly new at the whole video creating thing.

I liked my 3011 so much I kept it all these years in the closet until I got the energy to work on it. Thanks to you, the biggest hassle was easy, ie, taking it apart! i have a electronic guy who works on circuit boards, but not monitors due to the size. He said if I bring the boards to him however, he'll check it out. Got them out & ready to get them to him. Keeping my fingers crossed the problem is the same as yours AND he can find the parts. Thanks for the very helpful video.

Thanks for the tips on opening this box. My monitor was periodically going blank after 20 minutes or so until I opened it up and re-soldered some questionable looking solder joints on the supply board. A couple days later, so far so good. Your video was very helpful.
  • You must have an amazing dump yard near you. Holy smokes those are some fantastic finds!!!

Your guide really helped me with mine, I have had this monitor for almost 19 years. Cold solder was a great observation

Thanks for all the effort. This enables us to save the environment (and cash) as well! 7:47 Board Review 14:00 Tear down begins
  • Big thanks for making this video. I was able to get into my U3011 without damaging it. I found that I had cracked solder joints in the power supply that I was able to repair.

Cheers! Walked out of work with 3 of the 30" versions of these destined for the tip due to the office upgrading to 40" ulltrawide curved screens. One had its screen cracked on the journey, and the other just stopped working (buttons light up but did nothing). Using this I spliced two broken ones into one working monitor!!

I fixed two of these. After about 4 years those two (first one of) 2200 uF capacitors die. Just need to replace those that costs less than a dollar. It all starts as random back light shut down, but when you re-connect the power it would work for a day or two, but that trick would stop working after a few days and week. Then you just replace those caps.

really nice video! thanks for sharing! I have an old dell u2711, some years ago it started to have a problem: it only works whe the brightness and contrast are set to low, when i try to increase any option, the screen turn off, i have to set them back to low (the buttons at the right lateral still works), turn off it and turn on again and the image appears.. after watch your video i opened it, tried to reatach the cables and done a little cleaning, but the problem persist, didn't find any bad capacitor on the boards too... i'm considering to replace the power supply board... do you think there's a higher chance of have another board with problem or have any other suggestion? Thanks for your videos! they are very useful!

I'm looking at a refurb'd U3011T on PBTech, Graded A off lease. I'm really thinking about biting the bullet. I own an original in mint condition U3007WFP. Absolutely glorious monster it is but as you probably know... Very limited in what it can do. I own 4 of the mini 17" ones that look the same. My dream one I'm yet to find is the U3014

Watching this on the same monitor I just picked up today at a local recycling center.

I wonder if I should get all this old Ultrasharp monitor for my editing job, since a modern monitor can reproduce 99% sRGB just as good with way higher 10mil contrast ratio. So enticing when thinking all these monitors was at $1000 10 years ago and now just cost less than $100 to get a working one.

I’ve had my dell u3011 since new in 2012. Still going strong. Finally replacing it with a LG c1 48” tv in the next couple weeks.

great monitor line up. I'm rocking a U2410 vertically and the U3011 landscape as main monitor. Love the 16:10 aspect ratio, so difficult to find in modern monitors.

Today I've bought this monitor in not working condition for 30€. I've found that all output voltages (5V, 24V left and right) are missing. With a bit of troubleshooting, I've found the power switcher TOP266VG cracked! With a smoke mark under it, on the PCB. I think that this switcher pilot the secondary transformer and looking the pin-out, I've got 0L between Source and Drain. Now I'm waiting for replacement part, but this monitor has a huge power supply.. so look all power IC, power MOSFET (there are 5 in primary side). It's possible that one of there are faulty. Also you need always to check if you got 300/380V on big primary capacitor. Hoping for the best

Where did you get the power supply? I've only seen one so far, on aliexpress, which costs around €140

hi. you (or anyone else) have any experience with replacing the backlight or diffuser on u2711s?
