Jasper National Park is one of the most gorgeous, protected pieces of wilderness in the world, attracting about 2.5 million visitors every year. But there are now fears for the community's future as a devastating wildfire threatens it.

It’s believed that up to half of the structures in the townsite of Jasper have been damaged by the fire, but all critical infrastructure has been saved.

Eric Sorensen looks at what makes Jasper so exceptional, and the hope that its beauty can be rebuilt once the smoke clears.

The beauty is still there. The mountains and lakes didn’t burn down, trees will grow back, town will rebuild.

I am a true Albertan. Was born here and lived here all my life. Have visited Jasper so many times during my life time. Had my honeymoon in one of its campsites. My heart cries for what we have lost. My hope and prayers go out to everyone who is suffering right now. Jasper has always had a special magic to it and I turly hope my province gets behind all those who will try to bring back that magic.😪😮‍💨

So sad to see what happened to Jasper. We used to visit this beautiful place when we were still living in Edmonton years ago. Praying for a quick recovery 🙏

Got to visit Jasper last October and it was easily one of the most beautiful towns I've ever been to. So sad to see this happen. Wishing the best for the community, and hopefully everything can be rebuilt.

Every year that I drove to visit the family I'd pass through Jasper over Christmas break. Sad to see, it was so pleasant.

Four generations of my family have loved and enjoyed Jasper and the Canadian Rockies. It breaks our hearts seeing this fire rip into this community. Jasper has always maintained its small town friendly feel. Surrounded by outstanding natural beauty. Fire seems to mar the landscape. And yet, beauty does rise from ashes and I know it will in this breathtaking part of the world. The gorgeous night sky is still there, the northern lights will still glow and there is a truly stunning landscape when a forest is reborn. Next summer the fireweed will come, then the wildflowers in all of their spectacular glory will grow among charred forest. Animals will return, berries (ok and bears 😬) will make their appearance, and the new growth forest will start to take root - the town will come back stronger than before, more tight knit and just as welcoming as a community. And we will continue to come and celebrate this strong, beautiful and vibrant place. Jasper, you continue to be in our hearts and in our prayers. ❤

Our hearts go out to the community of Jasper from the Yukon ❤ stay strong
  • But no lives were lost! You can replace homes, but you can’t replace a human LIFE!
  • Lytton BC burns to the ground and after 3 years it is finally starting to rebuild , I bet Alberta gets Jasper rebuilt a great deal faster. Different provincial government .

It is hard to remind people at a time like this, but the dense forest was growing right up to the edge of Jasper. There were no fire breaks around the town. This is very dangerous if the forest burns. A similar situation happened in Greenville, California which was largely consumed by a similar type of fire in 2021. These towns need to balance their love of the forest with common sense to prepare for the worst case.
