Evan Gershkovich lands in US after Russia prisoner swap

Publicado 2024-08-01
Evan Gershkovich, the American reporter jailed for spying after a show trial in Russia, has landed in the United States after being freed in a momentous prisoner swap on Thursday.

The Wall Street Journal reporter was greeted by his family on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland shortly before midnight. Waiting to welcome him with his loved ones were President Biden and Kamala Harris, who had helped to broker the landmark prisoner exchange with the Kremlin.

Gershkovich, 32, was joined on the plane by the former US marine Paul Whelan, 54, and Alsu Kurmasheva, 47, a Russian-American journalist. Whelan spent almost six years in Russian jails after he was arrested in 2018 and convicted of spying. Kurmasheva was sentenced last month to a six-year prison term under Russia’s draconian censorship laws.

Thanks, President Biden and his administration, for making this possible! Trump had the chance to do something similar for Julian Assange but was never bothered 😅
